Not very well thought out reactions
Jun. 21st, 2003 08:04 pmThis is not a children's book. I'm going to be very interested in the reviews of this book, because...damn.
On the whole, I liked it quite a lot.
Before the book came out, I thought that Sirius wasn't the likeliest next death. She wouldn't be so cruel as to take Harry's parental substitute, would she? Hagrid, Lupin, a older Weasley, maybe Dumbledore, but Snape and Sirius seemed much less likely to me (Snape because he has too bigger role to play, I suspect). As the book went on, I got more and more worried about Sirius, but his death was still like a kick to the stomach. I really didn't know who it was going to be, hell, she had me worried that she had killed off Hermione!. I know Sirius wasn't very popular with some Snape fans, as many of my friends are, so I wonder what the fannish reaction to this will be. This might get me in trouble, but I'd rather she'd killed off some of those other people, actually. Though my feeling now is that no one is safe. There is no way that everyone is going to get out of this alive.
A much darker book, wasn't it? Harry's anger, the new perspective on his parents, the sheer nastiness of some of the goings on (like the detention punishment with the lines writing into Harry). Though if Harry doesn't actually grow and learn from it all (ie that he should stop and think), the teenage angst will get old soon.
I didn't really like the prophecy thing. Felt a bit last minute.
Like that the gang isn't just Harry, Hermione and Ron.
Yes, Harry can be a brat, and yes, Padfoot and Prongs were assholes, but shouldn't Snape act like the grownup occasionally and rise above this? Will we get an explanation as to why he didn't resume the lessons?
Liked that Dumbledore admitted that he screwed up, and why.
Ha, totally forgot how much I snickered over Dudley's line where he asks Harry if Cedric is his boyfriend.
I  Neville.
The only Harry pairing I've ever read much of is Harry/Draco. However, it is really pushing it at this point to redeem Draco.
Interesting to see stuff I've seen people talk about, like the divisions between the houses, get addressed. Well, at least by the Sorting Hat.
So, when's Book 6 coming out? *g*

Date: 2003-06-21 09:57 pm (UTC)You idealist :-) I had him picked as the MOST likely death for the same reason!
she had me worried that she had killed off Hermione!.
LOL, I was actually relieved for a moment when I thought it was her. I was ready to sacrifice anyone but Ron.

Oh yes, poow widdle Snape. He needs to grow up, not throw tanties and hold grudges. /puts on her asbestos undies

It's teen angst, and his is, unfortunately, a teen. I found it spot on, NOT to say it wasn't tiresome, teen boys ARE tiresome. Lupin himself said people often stop being gits as they grow up. Harry was showing signs of it, I think - Ginny really put him in his place. Go her.
Ha, totally forgot how much I snickered over Dudley's line where he asks Harry if Cedric is his boyfriend.
HA! It'd be giving Dudley too much credit to interpret that as anything beyond an empty taunt, though.

Date: 2003-06-22 02:45 am (UTC)I thought his long-term survival chance was low, but thought she'd start with lesser people (after all, who was Cedric in the grand scheme of things). Like a minor Weasley. I also feared greatly for Lupin. But the unremitting dark tone of the book made me fear for everyone, and the way she was writing about Sirius made that seem quite likely.

Oh, that's how I felt. It was accurate, and not unexpected, given what he's been through. I just trust JKR to have him grow past this at least somewhat by the next book.

Dude, thank you *g*.

True, but it still made me snicker ;)

Seriously, you've both got very good, very valid points, and I for one don't mind at all if you flame Snape into oblivion. He's a git, and he really should get over himself.
Having said that, I'll happily admit to being a Snape fan, but I'm not at all militant about it. Besides, it'd be boring if everyone agreed on the same points, wouldn't it?

Date: 2003-06-23 08:27 pm (UTC)Ditto Sirius, for that matter. They can be as infantile as each other, and I'm absolutely fine with that.
