This weekend, I'm not working, I'm not studying, and I have the house to myself. So I've been getting a few things done around here, and am taking the opportunity to get some serious uninterruped lazing-in-front-of-tv time. Yesterday's viewing included Criminal Minds, NCIS LA, Hawaii Five-O and Tangled (sidenote: I have a new favourite Disney character - Maximus!)

Having caught up on those other shows (Bones, Castle and NCIS will have to wait for the rest of the family), I'm continuing to work through H5O, just finished episode 11. I do enjoy the show, though there's one backstory detail for McGarrett that particularly bugs me.

Steve's grandfather died at Pearl Harbour? Making his father at least around 70 when he died? I started to watch the pilot again, to see how old his father looked, and then remembered how much I disliked the setup of the pilot (the sheer incompetence and rampant stupidity of Steve being able to take a call from his father while on an op, and his subsequent actions? Almost kept me from watching anymore of the show).

So I looked the actor up IMDB, and he's about 9 years too young, which I guess isn't horrible by Hollywood standards. It's an odd thing to get hung up on, but they then made a big deal about it in the hostage episode too, and I was just watching going "really? really?"

Yeah, yeah - of all the unbelievable things in this show to get hung up on, right? I just wish there was a fraction of the fic for Sam and G from NCIS LA as there is for H50. And there needs to be crossovers! Being SEALs is such a defining part of both Steve and Sam, there's no way they haven't crossed paths ;)

Speaking of fic, I haven't read a huge amount yet, but there's one story that I'm looking for again - posted just after DADT repeal passed the US Senate, it's closeted!Steve's reaction to when a SEAL friend of his comes out and announces he's getting married to a guy.

Yup. :)

John was about 34 when Steve was born and Steve is his eldest. The elder Steve was probably in his early 20's when he died. I'm basing that on the history of an average age of a sailor being 19 during WWII and the average marrying age of a typical male during that time to be 21. The question I can't answer is, was the elder Steve an Officer or Enlisted. Both John and Steve the younger are Officers.

As for the pilot...Steve had a satellite phone. How Hesse (Go Spike!) got the phone number, I don't know. Is that standard for an Op? I don't know, but it at least is not a cell phone. I think that's why Hesse's brother told him to answer it. It was strange for the phone to be ringing.

As for both Sam and Steve being SEALs, I think that at some point they were going to have crossed paths. I agree with you that the community is not that big, but I also think it has more to do with whether Sam was enlisted or not. If Sam was an officer, then the chances are higher that they might know each other casually. If he was enlisted, Sam and Steve might know of each other from the community, but not on a personal level unless they were both in the same team. Steve is SEAL Team 5 which operates in the Pacific Theater.

I don't remember if Sam has ever mentioned which Team he was on, or which area he operated in. What languages does Sam speak? I don't remember off the top of my head and that would help narrow it down.

Found it, he retired as a Chief Petty Officer. Arabic and middle eastern culture. Wikipedia is our friend.*

Found some info...Okay, it is most likely that Sam was SEAL Team 6, otherwise known as Naval Warfare Development Group. (SEAL Team 6 no longer officially exists. It's the NSWDG, but since they are comprised of all SEALs, um, yeah, you do the math) They deal heavily with the Middle East and Terrorism. This fits with Sam's language skills and cultural knowledge. YES! Ha! It also fits with Sam and Steve probably crossing paths at one time or another due to Hesse's gun running and armament dealing enterprises. I don't know a lot about gun dealers, but I imagine that they don't stay in strictly assigned zones.

Steve has been chasing Hesse for about five years, so it makes sense that he and Sam would have crossed paths sometime in the last five years, assuming Sam left the SEALs shortly before Sep of 2009.

The other three SEAL Teams that Sam might have been stationed with are SEAL Team 2, 3 or 7. SEAL Team 3 is based out of the West Coast, serve the Southwest Asian Theater, of which Iraq is in. SEAL Team 7 had operations on the ground in Iraq but I don't know what their theater is other than they were deployed in Iraq for six months. SEAL Team 2 is based on the East Coast and serves the Atlantic Theater. This one is a *high* probability. This team has spent a lot of time on the ground in Iraq, Bosnia, and Somalia. The thing to listen for in the series is Guam. If Sam served with the Naval Warfare Unit One out of Guam, then he's SEAL Team 3 or 7. If Sam mentions Ops out of Virginia, then he's 2. If the series keeps strictly with the 'It's classified' theme, then he is most likely the NSWDG.
