Supernatural got renewed for an 8th season?

Oh god, it's the new Smallville, isn't it? It will never die a natural death...

(I'm happy for people still watching it, but I was just so thrown, because haven't they totally promised several different times that the current season would be the last one, like starting several seasons ago?)

I will never stop being vaguely surprised and saying "Wait, that's STILL going?" whenever I hear things like this. Wow.

I know! (and that icon is lovely)

No, they've never promised that. The first story arc ended after five years, and since then they've always said if they were renewed, they were prepared to take things in other directions. Also, it's not like the CW has a long list of shows on its roster to keep around. :)

Which is why Smallville ran forever and a day :)

And thanks, even when I was watching I wasn't really actively involved in the fandom, so my impressions =/= reality. And I'm just skeptical in general about shows lasting this long (and I wish the show I was mostly fannishly involved in would end right now after its third season, hah).

I sort of feel like nothing should ever run for more than six seasons (and a movie). I defy you to think of an exception.

Well, I liked the 9th and 10th seasons of SG1, but can totally skip some of their other seasons.

But yes, in general, I agree, which is why I was wtf-ing at SPN being picked up again, not so much a comment on this show specifically as on letting all shows run for a natural time and then end them.

IDK, maybe it's a really hard thing to do. To be able to tell when a show has run its course, when you are super close to it and it's your baby. Even so, maybe they should get outside consultants or something. Professional shark-jumping detectors.

In a perfect world, the network would fill that role, but of course it's only a cost-benefit analysis to them, not quality control.

OMG really? Ahahahaha. How many more times do those poor boys have to die and go to hell?

Until they've visited all 9 circles of hell, I guess?

I don’t think they promised it was ending (that was only S5), more that it was always on the brink of cancellation in the early years.

These days, I look back at that and laugh. Never thought it would run THIS long!

Ah, that's what probably added to my perception.

It did? Seriously? *sigh* I am so sad I don't even feel squeeful for it anymore. I gave up about 3 episodes in this season - I just couldn't do it anymore. Not even for the pretty.

I kinda gave up during season 5, then ended up catching up. Started watching season 6, got bored after the first few episodes, and then when the season was over, skimmed through it watching bits of the Castiel and angels arc for the lolz. Never crossed my mind to check out any of this season - just not interested.

I started getting there around the time you did and pushed myself to keep watching, kept telling myself it would get better. Clearly, it didn't (IMO).

This season, little I did see, was completely, utterly ridiculous.

I'm excited that it got renewed, but am tired of the biblical theme that's been going on for the past few years. I thought I had read before this season started that they were going back to episodes more like the first season (where they were based on urban legends), but apparently that didn't happen.

I think that's one of my issues with the show going on and on and on - when you've raised the stakes as far as they did, how can you keep going without being redundant or just getting repetitive?
