Does anyone have recs (or anti-recs) for ISPs? Planning ahead for my move, and I might be interested in not just phone/internet, but also bundling my mobile too, if the deal is good (I'm off-contract).

I've been with iiNet for five years, and they're great. Very few dropouts, excellent plans/data limits, and they will bundle your phone. They have prepaid SIM cards (including mobile data) available, too.

thank you so much for sharing your experience with them - I'm comparing plans at the moment, but they're one of the faves.

If politics is important, they're also the staunchest opponent to copyright holders trying to force ISPs to give up customer details to track down suspected piracy. They won a case in the Federal Court in early 2011 against Roadshow and about thirty other apellants. They're also pretty staunchly opposed to the NBN and internet censorship in general. And I've never had an issue with their customer service (but then I've only ever had to call them a couple of times).

LJ never sent me notification, hmmm >:(

That is a good point, and I'm certainly seeing a good theme about their customer service. We've had pretty good experience with Optus too, in that regard. But damn, TPG's $70 unlimited internet/phone bundle with all non-mobile Aussie calls included (plus some international minutes) is hard to go past.

LJ fell over for a few minutes earlier today, maybe that's delayed things.

TPG would be my second choice, yeah. They have great deals, but I think their tech support isn't very good. Though I heard that a few years ago, so things might have changed.

Going by whirlpool forums, customer service is not as good as iinet or internode, but damn that good value is hard to pass (plus, there's a lot of bagging of Optus there, and maybe ADSL is different to cable, but we've been with them for years with few issues). A co-worker of my sister who is internet junkie (downloads more shows than I've heard of + gamer) is on TPG, so she's gonna get his thoughts on it too.

I can't really start the process until settlement, so I've got 12 days to make up my mind (HOLY CRAP I need to get on with packing, and to stop buying ALL THE THINGS).

You going to the My Chemical Romance show at the Hordern later this month?

Optus ADSL is definitely different to cable. One of the reasons I switched from Optus to iiNet is because of the Optus CS attitude. Ultimately, TPG is a good choice for people who can do their own setup and Googling when connection issues arise, I reckon.

I ... didn't even know MCR was coming out here. Can't afford it, in any case; I'm going to be 25% short on my salary this month so there's no extra cash for funsies.

Not a rec nor an anti-rec. Ozemail iinet - I get 200 gig per month (up and down), plus land line rental for $80. I was quoted $99, but for some reason, it never goes that high.

Service: If you get through to the Australian service centre, they know what they are doing. Efficient and unfriendly. If you get through to the South African service centre, they always want to phone you (I don't like that) to sort out your problems. They are incredibly nice, but they'll have to get out the instruction manuals.

Never get down time. Get free phone calls or free downloads or something else on Christmas day every year.

I don't have my mobile with them.

I'm definitely checking them out, but TPG have a deal that I'm finding it hard to resist - $70 gives me unlimited internet plus home phone line plus local and national call costs (but not calls to mobiles) included. Apparently their cusomter service isn't as good as iinet though.

I was keen on them for a while, but horror stories re their CS put me right off. For me, it's a trade off.

Depending on where you're moving, you may not be able to access adsl. Depends on how far you are from the phone exchange. Up in the wilds of Hornsby we had no choice but to go with cable because we're more than ~2.5km from the exchange. And mobile reception is bad enough, wireless internet reception is dire.

It's only around the corner from my sister, and she's got ADSL, plus I've looked at exchange info and I should be ok (I hope). I'll miss the cable broadband I've got now though! :)

I've been with iPrimus for maybe four years - two on the current contract. I'm paying roughly $115/month for internet and land line, with 200GB (80 on/120 off) - but I'm about to bump up to a 700GB (350/350) plan for the same money, since my current plan is long out of date. I've never had a drop out and their helpdesk is... okay (takes a bit of convincing to assure them I've tried everything on-script and require actual help), but I've only had to call twice. My mobile isn't with them and I'm not sure it'd make a difference if it was.

Discord would like us to move to Bigpond, but given how close we are to the exchange I don't think it would make a difference in speed, and just cost a bunch of money and fucking-about to switch over. Also, it's more money for less. Am happy to hear otherwise, though.

In either case, this should help: http://bc.whirlpool.net.au/

Yup, I've been hitting whirlpool up a bit for some of my shopping research. Thanks for the Iprimus info (I was with them ages ago, back in the days of dialup), I'll check them out too!

I've had iinet for two years withut a single problem. I have Naked DSL which gives me a VOIP phone with no phone line rental and free phone calls. Because I have the Internet I also have my mobile with them - Sim only, and it costs me $20 extra a month, so total is around $79.95. Never run out of download, great customer service on the very odd occasion something went down, and always fixed in minutes. And they are Aussie based, no talking to someone in India!

I've been with internode for a number of years. Never had any drop outs. They are based in SA as is their helpdesk (IIRC). I've only called them once and the service was excellent. My mobile is not with them but I know they have phone bundles. If you visit their site www.internode.net you can enter your number and it will tell you what service they have available in your area ie naked, adsl etc.

Thank you for the info, I'm definitely looking into them too (though as they've been purchased by iinet, I believe, I wonder if they'll keep it as a separate operation long-term).

Can't help much with the internet question since I'm in the States... However, if Clearwire internet service ever starts up there, STAY AWAY from them... I've had trouble with them from day one.

That being said, I just wanted to comment on how much I love your icon!

As far as I know, they're not out here, but we do have our own dodgy ones to avoid, alas.

Thanks! I never did read the context of WHY he had a chocolate dalek, but just knew it had to be icon'd :)

Hey, E, when's your birthday? Are we doing something?

Man, I wish LJ would give me my comments, I guess they really do want us all to move to Dreamwidth.

Birthday isn't until 7 Feb (Tues) so might do something weekend before that, maybe at my place? :)
