If I were to buy myself a Kindle, which the good AUD/USD exchange rate is making even more tempting, does anyone have recommendation about what brand/style of case I should get?

Or any other thoughts about Kindles? I'd be using it for reading fic even more than actual ebooks (though them too).

I just took the Glee s1 boxset out of my Amazon cart, since the extras are disappointing.

I got the leather case with the elastic band strap in apple green. I'd probably have done slightly better getting the same one with the light attached, but after buying a Kindle I wasn't up for another $50 worth of casing.

As for fic, you should know that Kindle's support for .pdf is shaky (and unofficial), so you'll want to convert it to .azw - there's a free program called Calibre for that. I'm extremely finicky about layout, so I ended up spending a scary amount of time adjusting fonts and margins and converting some 200-odd fics from .doc to .pdf to .azw - this isn't necessary, just how I went about it. :)

Anyway, I love mine. Aside from the sheer niftiness of e-ink, it's convenient as hell - having extra handbag space, not worrying about smushing paperback books, and the awesome convenience of being able to read a book within 60 seconds of buying it. You should get one. :)

What about converting straight from html, how well does that work?

Since I'm looking to upgrade from my main fic-reading device, my 5 year old Palm Zire, and most formatting would get stripped out in exporting fic to Plucker, I'm not too fussed about formatting, so long as it's readable :)

Amazon has a new case for the K3 with a built-in light that people are crazy about... I've heard people say the case is better than the Kindle! I have a K2, so no snazzy new case for me, but it's got a lot of positive buzz.

At first I'd dismissed the built-in light, but have gotten increasingly intrigued by it, thank you :)

If you're looking for something that will read pdf, have you thought about the Barnes and Noble nook? It's easier to side-load content on those than on Kindle. I say that as a nook user, so I'm biased. But man, ereaders are awesome in general.

As for a case, I made one from a piece of fabric and some foam that was a lot cheaper than the official ones.

Honestly, pdf hadn't been something I'd thought much one way or another. But I will check out the Nook again, I can't recall what it was from the comparative specs of the various e-readers that led to me decide (sort-of) on a Kindle :)

It's easier to side-load content on those than on Kindle.

How so?

nook reads more content directly, where as kindle requires a conversion process where you have to email files for conversion and then download them. It also allows you to buy from other sites or get loaners from the library which is limited with kindle.
