erilyn: gabe and mikey's hips (buffy)

I saw Wicked tonight with the family, after wanting to see it for ages, and it was awesome :D Sidenote: when did they start calling understudies 'standbys'? Or is there a difference? Cause we had the standby for Elpheba (though apparently the star performer hasn't been in it since November, as she's had voice problems).

Can anyone please hook me with a copy of the album? I'm spending a lot of time in the car with my parents on Saturday (we're going to Canberra to go to the Paris Masters exhibit) and I need music that we'll alll enjoy.

And while I'm being lazy, can anyone share the Glee soundtracks?

Understudies are part of the main cast and usually have a minor role. One cast member can understudy up to three or four different parts for one show. Standbys are NOT part of the main cast, only know one part, and are brought in when the lead can't make it for that show and the understudies are needed for something else. Usually standbys tend to be the person that takes over the lead role when the current lead's contract ends.

Huh. Looks like research for the Theatre!AU that never was came in handy. :D

The only correction I'd make to this is that usually the standby is the first go-to for the role if the lead can't go on. If for some reason the standby can't go on, then they'll pull from the understudies.

You also have understudies who don't have any on-stage role at all, but cover multiple roles. These are frequently referred to as "swings".

Also, depending on the show, understudies (or swings) often cover 5 or 6 roles and/or tracks. There's a guy on the Spring Awakening tour right now who is a member of the onstage ensemble, and covers all six male roles (and has gone on for five of them! not at the same time, obv. ;) )

I believe there's several standbys for both leads in Wicked, and at times they've had to go on mid show.

Amanda Harrison (the original Elpheba) has just announced that she won't be returning to the show.

Typically for a lead role such as Elphaba, there is one designated standby, and multiple understudies.
