Thoughts upon re-reading the Valdemar books

why can't Mercedes Lackey keep her own canon straight? I know it's a danger in writing things not in chronological order, and a fair bit can be hand-waved, but there's enough that makes me very grrrrr that neither she nor her editors seemed to have re-read her own previous books when preparing a new one.

I haven't re-read the Vanyel books this time around, if I want over-the-top angst about horrible things happening to gay woobies in love, I'll watch NCIS LA.

With the constant descriptions of the complete fabulousness of Tayledras and Kaled'a'in costumes, and their kinkiness openminded-ness, there totally needs to be an AU where Adam Lambert is one. And if he's a mage, we already know what he'd look like with the hair! And Kris could be a Herald or Valdemar bard. And then they make out.

Though I don't know I've ever read any fanfic crossing over with these books, which surprises me. And reminds me of the bandom Pern AU that I wish I could make someone write.

Oh man I would read a million words of a bandom Pern AU. A million. Also I have looked at Merceded Lackey books a thousand times and never actually picked them up. Worth it Y/N?

I actually had a whole bunch of specific ideas about the Pern AU, but they are in the comments of someone else's journal about two years ago. I do remember thinking that Jay-Z and Beyonce would make an kickass Weyrleaders though.

That's a really tough question. Um, I can't really say that they're really good, cause they've got many flaws, but they are entertaining to me? And there are quite a few main and supporting queer characters.

I read lots of science fantasy so I can over look flaws if they are readable. Looks like I will need a trip to Galaxy.

Her writing has definitely improved over the years (the first Valdemar books, the Arrows trilogy, are quite simple and could practically be YA except I don't think YA has some of that content happening to teenagers). It still tends towards overly descriptive and relying too much on telling rather than just showing, but like I said, I enjoy them.

The books aren't written in chronological order, but either chronologically or the order they were written is okay to read them.

Just don't start with the first book of the Storm trilogy (one of the later ones) like I did - really really confusing.

She has an odd writing style - reading over 20 of her books in a couple of weeks really made that clear to me. She over-explains every little detail of life in this 'verse, so there's not that much room for actual plot.

But still enjoyable (kinda like awesomely over-the-top badfic).

And Beyonce and Jay-Z need to be the Senior Weyrleaders in any Pern AU. I decree it. I wish I could remember all the Pern AU details I came up with, but it was in the comments of someone else's post (don't remember where or when).
