No photos or videos, as I didn't take my camera to this show. Lots of video for the Sydney show though.
My flight got cancelled, ugh. And I had already been at the airport for a while when I found out (didn't hear the text message which I received on my way out there, and my flight was still displayed when I arrived) - I was rather freaked out when I got to what should have been my gate to find my flight wasn't listed anymore. Instead of my 11:30am flight, they said they'd moved me to a 3pm one. Which would still get me there in time for the concert, but I really didn't want to sit around at the airport for half a day if I could avoid it. So I asked about waitlisting for other flights, and eventually managed to get onto the 1pm flight, so that wasn't too painful in the end.
I had the band on my flight. Well, a band, anyway. Sarcophagus (but with a weird spelling that I can't remember). I'd noticed them while I was waiting, because they couldn't have been more obviously a band if they were standing around holding a sign saying that (combination of American accents, tattoos, tshirts and gear, even though it wasn't instruments or anything). Found out their name from a Canadian girl I was chatting to while we were waiting to board who had talked to them. I totally made her day, it was hilarious - I asked her whereabouts in Canada she was from, and she goes "Victoria" and starts to explain where it is, and her face just lit up when I said "I know, I've been there". And then when I mentioned taking the train to Prince Rupert and then the ferry to Vancouver Island from there, she was like "OMG I was born there!". When I said while we were chatting about stuff (boarding was taking forever) about how Vancouver had reminded me of Sydney quite a bit, I thought she was going to hug me, she was so happy to find someone who thought that too. I was sitting in the very front row of the plane (which was not business class, alas), which felt odd.
Dear god, it was hot and humid in Brisbane. Finally got to my hotel about 2:30pm, meeting
laenji who had gotten there just ahead of me. And I didn't leave til going out the venue a bit after 6 - I wasn't leaving the airconditioning until I had too! Though I almost regretted this when my train was late and then delayed along the way (due to "an incident, the police have been called"). At least Brisbane trains are airconditioned. And you know you've been to a few shows in another city when you start playing guide to random fans (they were on the right platform but were going to get on a train that didn't go to Boondall). Though I'd forgotten about the lack of food choices immediately around Central once the food court area closes - having McDonalds for dinner wasn't the best idea ever :\
Got out to Brisbane Entertainment Centre, deep in the middle of nowhere, a bit later than I planned, but they hadn’t opened doors yet anyway, and I just wanted to hang at the back of the front floor section. No fighting teenies for breathing space for me (I would if I could, but I was getting uncomfortable being in a crowded train for ten minutes today, so...just no). It’s weird being at the back of the front section, there’s all this space...and then a few metres back, there’s a densely packed wall of people at the front of the rear section. First concert I’ve really done by myself, though I was by myself for Cobra Starship at the Roundhouse (but friends bailed on the front and found other friends for TAI).
Hey Monday are both adorable and in desperate need of a hair intervention. I enjoyed their set, they've got good energy, and by the end I was even thinking the bassist might be attractive...somewhere under the hair. The guitarist's (Mikey maybe?) love of getting people to make heart hands cracked me up. Pete came out to scream along on Obvious. Cassadee later told a little story about their food in the green room being all mixed together and gross and lots of flies and blamed it on FOB and threatened retaliation. They got a pretty enthusiastic reaction from the floor for a baby band, which is nice, cause there's nothing worse than a crowd being all :| at at opening band. Setlist: Run Don't Walk, Obvious, Arizona, Josey, Candles, Should've Tried Harder, How You Love Me Now and Homecoming.
Between bands, I wandered over and bothered
nabii and
cookiedough, and marveled at the...interesting choice of filler music - concluding with the 1812 Overture. Now, I've listened to the All-American Rejects a bit, and I saw Tournado a while back one time when
not_nele was visiting, but I really hadn't registered just how a) crazy Tyson is (which is VERY) and b) just how insanely energetic Mike is on-stage. Tyson was wearing the skin-tight bright pink pants from the Ellen appearance. He didn't appear to have washed his hair since arriving in the country. He took off his shirt to reveal a loose fitting tank top, and at one point implored the people down the front not to be afraid of his nipples, in case they hadn't seen a man's nipple before. He's just so hilariously skeezy, especially when not playing, so he was free to ponce and stagger and weave his way around the stage. (Why doesn't Tyson play on the songs from the new album?) And I'll totally be singing it as lovebitchlove in Gives You Hell now.
Nick Wheeler is just awesome and BENDY and adorable, with many many pretty guitars (a different one for every song, I think, and I especially loved the flying v or whatever they're called). There was some fun moments between the guys, and guys in the audience (of which there were a surpring number) really loved AAR. There were a pair near me that I really couldn't figure out if they were gay, or incredibly straight dudebros who were just really into AAR and cuddling each other when the music got particularly awesome. But I'd definitely go see the Rejects if they do their own tour out here sometime (please!) Setlist: Swing Swing, Dirty Little Secret, Paper Heart, I Wanna, Mona Lisa, Believe, Move Along and Gives You Hell.
And finally, Fall Out Boy! I think they're even better than when I saw them in 2007, and I thought the setlist was a pretty good mix, though I would have loved another one or two of my favourites from Folie a Deux (lol greedy). I was standing fairly centred, and could see all of them pretty much all of the time. Patrick sounded awesome (when he sings in his lower register, my brain melts), Pete was very bouncy, Joe was amazing (HIS HAIR IS BEYOND BELIEF - though it makes it hard to see his face at times) and I forget how much I love Andy drumming (totes his most attractive time). Cassadee came out for a bit of Sugar, and she and Patrick sound great together. Pete intro'd Sixteen Candles by claiming that he was reading the Twilight books - just so he could spoil the endings of each of them for her, cause she loves them. Patrick sang some of Lullaby - Pete's favourite song off the album, for the person he thinks about the most in the world ♥
I couldn't quite make out what he said in the intro to Beat It though, it sounded like something about "wish he was here, that's the only way this could be better" but with the context, the only interpretation I could come up with is that Pete also really misses John Mayer. He had "Best night of the party...so far" (I think) on the back of his guitar at one point. Also, "Aussie Aussie Aussie" at another, leading to the inevitable call and response (though most Americans, including Pete, can't say Aussie correctly). I also enjoyed when Pete decided to go back and play to Andy (not unusual) and then writhe on the floor for a while - all I could see where this flailing little feet in the air :)
I think Patrick's story for the night was them giving a shout-out and love and thanks (for taking them on tour when FOB were babies) to the Less than Jake guys, who were at the show because they were in Brisbane for Soundwave Festival. Pete also mentioned Alkaline Trio, and how he was wearing a belt that Matt Skiba gave him the belt that Pete was wearing - PETE REALLY LOVED THAT BELT, OK? I loved the light up guitars in I Don't Care. But not as much as I loved the extra drummers for Disloyal Order of Water Buffalo - OMG, I love that song so much anyway, but it's fucking fantastic live.
Pete's Gabe story (aka the intro to Disloyal Order of Water Buffalo) was awesome - all about how Gabe is awesome, best person for prank calls and drunken phone conversations that he'll never remember having, and saying how he asked Gabe how Pete could tell if he was in love or not.
Gabe: does your dick tingle when you think about her?
Pete: yes
Gabe: did it tingle a year ago?
Pete: yes
Gabe: if it's still tingling over a year later, that's love.
Pete wasn't sure if he should take this advice, but did explain how he asked Gabe how he does it, how does he get so wasted all the time, be the life of the party, and then do it all over again? (supposedly, Gabe's answer is "detox just to retox").
For Saturday, Pete pulled off his top to reveal a "Gabe is not a synonym for Sisky" tshirt. Also, he took off his belt, because he said he didn't trust the crowd with Matt's belt. As he's running around about to go into the crowd, he put his tshirt over Patrick's head really quickly, and NEARLY PULLED THE HAT OFF. Patrick really looked distracted for a moment ("NOT THE HAT!")
Setlist: Thnks Fr Th Mmrs, Thriller, Sixteen Candles, American Boy, Sugar We're Going Down, Lullabye, This Ain't a Scene, I Don't Care, Beat It, Headfirst Slide Into Coopersville, Nobody Puts Paby In A Corner, Take Over, The Break's Over, I Slept With Someone In Fall Out Boy, Disloyal Order Of Water Buffalo, Grand Theft Autumn, America's Suitehearts, Encore - Grenade Jumper, Me and You, Dance Dance and Saturday.
Found the girls (
jezzabe,
preachelectric,
nabii,
cookiedough, and more but I may be getting mixed up who was where) at the station, and we all squished into the train together and plonked ourselves down in the aisle. Remembered why I'd booked into the Citigate when I got back to the city - so nice to only have to walk a block and a half along a flat street than to walk up the hill to some of the other places I've stayed for shows in Brisbane, and the room was comfortable (though not large).
that was the tldr version. to sum up, AWESOME SHOW.
okay, I lied about no videos, these are some really good quality videos from someone who was on barrier - I generally find videos from the front of the crowd are hard to watch (unsteady camera) and hard to listen to (due to increased distortion) but these are damn good.
