Today was so much fun \o/

Fall Out Boy did a concert today for about 300 people onboard the HMAS Tobruk on Sydney Harbour. I didn't score tickets, but [livejournal.com profile] jocondite got one thanks to fannish generosity. After running a bit late and a false start when we left without the email printouts and taking a only slightly-roundabout route, I delivered her to Garden Island (note: not an island, Sydney's main navy base area). Then, with a surprising lack of difficult (given my lack of familiarity with these suburbs and ability to get lost anywhere), I collected [livejournal.com profile] shihadchick and [livejournal.com profile] anne_elliot from Kings Cross station. We combined brunch with some sightseeing for [livejournal.com profile] anne_elliot and headed off for Pancakes at Darling Harbour, with me playing crappy tour guide along the way ("look, it's a building!").

[livejournal.com profile] iibnf joined us for pancakes, and it was most fun (I only wish I could read the epic Italian bandslash badfic). We wandered across Darling Harbour, admiring the view (sometimes I forget how pretty my city is! ♥) and checked out the Wildlife World (for possible koala petting) but it was too expensive for the time we had. So instead we parted ways with [livejournal.com profile] iibnf, and headed off for some more sightseeing (Opera House and harbour and stuff). But not before attempting to sing AAR's "Gives You Hell" to her, to see if she had heard it, and then ten seconds later walking up some stairs and hearing it play.

A great place to do this from is Mrs Macquarie's Chair (park area on the harbour). Which is also right near Garden Island, since we thought we'd check out if we could hear anything (though expectations were low). We parked on the wrong side, and as we're walking over, we can hear music. The show was supposed to run from an unknown time til about 2pm, and it was a bit before 1:30. We get all excited and rush over like dorks and realise we've got a great view of the ship (purple x = ship, us = duh, and o = opera house, labeled for a reason I can't remember). Way too far away to see detail on the stage, but still exciting (did I mention the dork thing?). But as we're standing there, it dawns on us that the music is not FOB. Was it already over? Did we need to rush off to pick up [livejournal.com profile] jocondite? But why was everyone still on the boat?

But then, a text from [livejournal.com profile] jocondite made it all clear - things were running VERY late (lol what a surprise). We thought we'd wander off for some sightseeing and come back, but as we're discussing it, we can hear announcements being made on the ship, and within a minute or so, they are playing.

And we can hear it SO CLEARLY. We could even make out a bit of when they were talking, though not always (Pete: thanks to the navy for letting us perform here. Me: The navy are always down with homoeroticism). They performed for about 40 minutes, though at first they were totally doing the concert setlist and we were wondering if they'd do the entire set.

IT WAS SO MUCH FUCKING FUN. We were giddy with glee, bouncing around and dancing and generally acting like utter lunatics and our faces looked like :DDDDDDD It was just so unexpected that we were getting to hear the concert the way we did. And we were getting judged so hard by all sorts of random passerbys - joggers, cyclists, tourists etc, but we just didn't care. Apart from the couple of girls who just happened to being tourists, asked us who was performing and liked FOB so stayed (I'm surprised we didn't scare them off, honestly). It probably sounds a bit silly, but it was a beautiful day, hanging out with friends and enjoying FOB in this unique way. We were calling people and cracking each other up all the time, and generally just being uberdorks. We had a three person mosh pit! We did the robot during "Dance Dance"! [livejournal.com profile] shihadchick and I danced around, spinning each other (in a rather dangerous way with hindsight, since we were on a slope with rocks below us)!

Sadly, it had to come to an end. We finally wandered around for a little bit, so the girls could take the compulsory tourist shots of the harbour, bridge and opera house (including giant fucking cruiseliner parked behind the opera house that looked taller than the building). As we drove back to Garden Island, the shuffle on my cd finally kicked out something other than FOB (it's so freaking biased its hilarious) so we were doing the Guilty Pleasure dance with the music blaring and windows down as we passed by people leaving the show. Found [livejournal.com profile] jocondite, who was happy but sunburnt, poor thing.

Drove around the harbour some more, admiring the view and pumping her for details of the show, which sounded like a blast. Stopped to stock them up for their flight (and find some after-sun lotion), then had to take them out to the airport. Why do friends have to go home? Everyone should live near me!

On my way home, discovered that Nova was broadcasting the show so heard at least half of it (and yet, the sound quality wasn't much of an improvement, but hearing the talking parts properly was awesome - Pete wanted to make someone walk a plank and got told "don't be an idiot, this isn't a pirate boat" so instead he asked the captain if they could blow something up). I hope they put it up on their website or it gets played again and captured.

Got a text message soon after dropping them off that they'd almost walked right into Patrick at the airport. And as we predicted, [livejournal.com profile] jocondite is on the same flight as them. Possibly a good things she didn't flip off Pete from the front row for insulting NZ at the show (like I told her afterwards she should have). Also, I forgot one of our most important realisations - [livejournal.com profile] jocondite has two mums, me and [livejournal.com profile] shihadchick, cause we boss her around and nag her so much :D ilu, bb.

If I ever remembered to use tags, I should make a tldr one for posts like this. And now I just have to edit and upload all my videos from Sydney, and post all the fun stuff about it and Brisbane, and try to remember more of the hilarity of the accidental creepstering that we did at the hotel last night. I only had 4 and 1/2 hours sleep last night, and about 5 and 1/2 the night before. I need sleeeeeeeeeeeep.

All the flags around the city, on buildings and parks and on top of the Bridge, were at half-mast for the National Day of Mourning for the victims of the Victorian bushfires. It was a sobering reminder of the horrors which only happened two weeks ago.

I totally expected to see more fans around, it seemed like the natural vantage point to me, but if we hadn't been sightseeing too, I'm not sure we would have tried.

random Fall Out Boy experiences for the win! \o/
