ILU SISKY BUSINESS. Because his new year's resolution is to be more like Gabe (William: you're gonna have to drink a lot more vodka, kiss a lot more boys). William explains how Gabe and himself are like a tasty salad dressing. Also, I approve of Butcher's resolution (at least a trim, please).

I'm off to see "Australia" with my sister and N. I saw "Yes Man" with [livejournal.com profile] iibnf yesterday, I had no expectations about it at all, but enjoyed it! Last night, went to Luna Park with [livejournal.com profile] hnix, [livejournal.com profile] veronamay and [livejournal.com profile] lydia_petze (and we spotted the former premier Morris Iemma twice). I love dodgem cars, giant slippery slides and ferris wheels with views of Sydney Harbour a lot.

Okay, am back from "Australia".I enjoyed it, but it was a flawed film that could have been so much better. I think criticism of Nicole Kidman is not accurate, I thought she did a good job with the role, all the cast were good (Brandon Walters as Nullah was amazing). The film's biggest problem was the fact that they didn't know what movie they were making or what genre it was in. Was it a classic style Westen set in Australia? Was it an over-the-top parody of westerns, because there were moments, like Hugh Jackman bathing and some bizarrely cheesy cinematography (contrasting unpleasantly with some gorgeous realistic filming) that confused me? Was it a romance? Was it a war movie? Was it a look at the despicable treatment of Aboriginal people and the complexity of inter-racial relations? It tried to be all these things, and didn't really end up succeeding at any. Which is a shame, because it had potential.

So true about 'Australia'! The problem starts with the title itself, did they really think they could encapsulate the whole country with this one movie? Oh well.

good point! they couldn't even figure out in the title what the movie was about. and really, if you're gonna be vague, it should have just been The Territory or something, since they didn't venture to the rest of the country.

SISKY! My love for TAI sneaks up on me, sometimes. I forget how funny they all are. <3

Good point about 'Australia', but I think the same thing could be said for Baz's other movies. I think he's the kind of film maker who likes to play with themes and styles and stereotypes to see how they all fit together and play off of each other. Sometimes it works really beautifully (Moulin Rouge!) and other times it's a little clumsy and feels over-worked (Australia!).

I still loved the movie, though. At least, I loved it when I could get over Nicole Kidman's terrible, terrible plastic surgery'd face. Why, Nicole? WHY?

I would have liked to have loved it, but it was just too clunky and confused for me to fall for it. But I enjoyed the movie and don't regret seeing it.

It needed both expanding (in some places) and some serious editing in others.
