ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.

Backstory: for months now, streaming files haven't worked on Firefox (they'd load, I could grab them with DownloadHelper, but wouldn't play), so any youtube/buzznet/etc things that I wanted to watch or listen to, I pasted the link into IE. Annoying, but whatever.

During the last week, I unsuccessfully tried to watch videos on the Colbert Nation website (though IE) and it told me to update my version of Flash Player, so I did. This...didn't go well. End result, after multiple uninstall and install attempts, I can now sometimes watch streaming videos in Firefox (yay?) but can't at all in IE. For instance, at youtube I get an error message "Hello, you either have JavaScript turned off or an old version of Adobe's Flash Player." LIES!

Also, even in Firefox, videos on Colbert Nation and Daily Show websites don't work :( I think my computer is a McCain supporter.

ETA: ok, this is ridiculous. I just installed Google's Chrome browser, and while youtube works in it, the Colbert site still doesn't work. Anyone know if they block international users, but don't bother giving a message that says so? Their terms of use say it's for US residents only. No, apparently they can be viewed internationally. Just not by me *sheds single emo tear*

ETA(2): Currently, if I try to view videos at colbernation.com, it doesn't give me an error or anything, but no video loads, there's just a blank square. However, if I watch a video from there embeded somewhere else (like my own lj), it works! Well, sort of. It works in Chrome, it works with no audio in Firefox, and nada in IE. I'm so confused.

if I were you, I'd first back up all my bookmarks in both IE and Firefox. Then I'd install a portable version of firefox and see if the streaming video works using that. If it does, well, then I'd get the FEBE extension (Firefly extension backup extension) and back up your extensions on firefox; there's even an extension called CLEO from the same author that will take all your extensions and make them into one install, which is really handy. Then I'd completely uninstall both browsers and run CC clearner, reboot, run it again, and reinstall the newest IE and the same version of Firefox that you had installed before, and then you can install your same extensions, too.

I'm no expert, it just sounds like a settings thing to me.

As soon as I feel I have the brainpower and alertness to attempt this, I probably will. Especially as FF has decided to go back to mostly not playing flash again.

Thanks!

Ugh. Well keep in mind that this is just me basically going with my one big technical skill - reboot ;) The portable version is a good way to test it, though, and I really hope it works :)
