Cobra/TAI/Panic, Brisbane, August 20th
Sep. 14th, 2008 03:10 pmThere's no videos (ok, I link to 1) or pictures in this one (didn't bother taking my camera), but I just wanted to post something about this, for myself. Of course, since I got really lazy once the tour was over, I didn't write much down at the time, so I don't think this is going to be very detailed about the concert. It's mostly a big happy blur now /o\
Much to the bemusement of my co-workers, I worked Wednesday morning (honestly, I'm surprised I got anything done, especially when getting texts from
jocondite about spotting band members), got changed at lunchtime and told them I see them the next day.
Caught the 2pm flight up to Brisbane, had a seat free next to me, and re-read "A Civil Contract" that I was bringing along to lend to
jocondite. Found the hotel I was sharing with her and
shihadchick - Metro Hotel Tower Mill on Wickham Terrace (which gets a qualified recommendation - good price, nice room, about 5-10 minute walk from Central Station but uphill, but there was ongoing loud truck noise in the morning that I could have done without). The girls had already checked in, so I got ready, petted the special edition Black Parade vinyl that
shihadchick had brought back from the US for me (thank you again!) - there are no witnesses to whether or not I referred to it as my precioussss.
I met up with
lastrega for a drink, I wish we could have had more time, and
i_naiad joined us before the two of us headed out to Brisbane Entertainment Centre. It was fairly last minute, her coming to the show, but I'm so glad she did (and not just so I had company *g*). Once we were out there, I noted that I've never seen so many parents waiting inside the venue (but not in the actual arena) during a concert for their kids. They were prepared with books etc. So cute.
Mostly I'm a seat girl, but this was one of the rare times that I got a floor ticket, which I also did for MCR at this venue last November. We were in the front half of the split floor, but the venue never filled up like it did for MCR. Last time I felt so awkward at the back of the front section, wandering around in the space, because of the mass of people packed at the front of the back half, right behind you (you didn't want to look back). This time, the front half wasn't as packed (not sold out) and there were only a few rows of people in the back half. We were about halfway back in the front floor, a bit towards stageleft of the middle. Atmosphere once the show got underway was great though. We caught the last couple of songs from the local opening act - not bad, and a good reaction from the crowd.
Cobra Starship setlist: City is at War, Send My Love to the Dancefloor, Church of Hot Addiction, Snakes on a Plane (with William and Sisky), Smile for the Paparazzi and Guilty Pleasure.
They were awesome, of course. One of the main things I remember about their set is that Gabe talked, a lot "". Can't remember what about mostly, though he was rambling about the unfairness of some people being at the back of the the divided floor at one point. Also, about love and bringing people together and telling the parents in the room about doing the "hey hey hey" and fist punches would bring them closer to their kids. He heckled someone on the floor for not joining in, and while we can't be sure it was
i_naiad, it felt like he was looking right at us.
Gabe's Saportasaurus hoodie, the tighttighttight pants (Ryland and Alex's commitment to bringing back white pants is commendable), and Vicky T's hotness were also memorable. She was rocking a sparkly headband, which didn't stay in very well, especially when Gabe got affectionate. Before SoaP, talked about how the song wouldn't have existed with TAI, and also talked at some point how the band wouldn't exist with TAI, it was all thanks to them, they even pick out Cobra's outfits (or he said that at one of the shows anyway). It was loldorable. A definite advantage to Gabe's height is that when he jumped down onto the floor towards the end of SoaP, he was still visible over the crowds' heads.
Also funny to me was the person behind us explaining throwing up your fangs to her friend as "it's like a Star Trek thing".
The Academy Is... setlist: Neighbors, Slow Down, Summer Hair = Forever Young, The Phrase that Pays, Everything We Had, We've Got a Big Mess, About A Girl, Classifieds (with Gabe), Checkmarks.
William has got even crazier with the playing with mic stands and throwing them around and swinging the cords too. Actually, Gabe did some crazy mic spinning around too, I wonder if they practice together. There were quite a few guys at the show (some even there without girlfriends attached), and they seemed particularly into TAI (discussion of this later lead us to wondering if they were all disappointed that the hot singer had cut her hair).
The new songs went down great, I really enjoy them live (Summer Hair has grown on me so much), and I thought it was a good mix of songs off the three albums for such a short set. Wish we'd had longer from both Cobra and TAI without losing Panic time. William was all over the stage, interacting with all the guys, and they wandered around a bit (Chiz likes going back and playing to Butcher).
Something I noticed at all three shows: William would make particular note of Chiz (for obvious reasons) but when he went to say something I could either not hear him properly or William would cut him off. NO TALKING FOR CHIZ. Also, William made jokes about Stephanie Rice at all three shows (twice claiming About A Girl was about his ex-gf Stephanie Rice, at Brisbane he said Chiz had a crush on her). Hilariously, he would always qualify it as "Australian swimmer Stephanie Rice". lol underestimating the saturation of Olympic swimming news in this country, William.
Gabe gave Mike a cuddle as he came outstage for a bit of Classifieds. For some reason, he'd changed, he dresses down for performing with TAI. Watchable video including him here, their handclasp at 2:10 makes me happy :)
Panic at the Disco setlist: We're So Starving, Nine in the Afternoon,But Its Better if You Do, Camisado, Shes a Handsome Women, The Only Difference Between Lying and Matyrdom, Behind the Sea, Lying is the Most Fun A Girl Can Have, Thank God Daily for Esteban, That Green Gentleman, There's A Good Reason These Tables Are Numbered. Folkin' Around, I Write Sins Not Tragedies, Northern Dowpour, Time to Dance (Brendon only), Pas de Cheval and Mad as Rabbits.
I LOVE THEIR STUPID FACES :D This was the first time I'd seen Panic live (unlike Cobra and TAI), and they didn't disappoint. We got the HCT setup - the flower-covered mic stands, background videos, and bubble machine \o/ A definite advantage to being reasonably close on the floor was being able to watch Brendon's face - he's just so fucking expressive and dorky and hard to take your eyes off him at times. But Ryan in his three piece suit and Spencer being hot and awesome and Jon (with his freshly buzzed hair, mmmmm) needed watching too. This is why one concert wouldn't have been enough, stupid co-worker who told me I was crazy *g*.
Something I'd never fully appreciated until seeing them for myself was how hilarious and endearing Jon's barefooted dancing and bopping away is. Also, him slapping Brendon on the ass delighted both Brendon and the audience. However, I was taken aback at one point when he said something like "Brendon and Ryan and me and the rest of the band". Thoughts of Spencer making Jon make up for that amused me for a while.
Also hilarious and loveable is Ryan's faily waving, and Brendon playing a tambourine on his head, and just everything about them all :D Brendon's fervent "god I hope so" after the "groom's bride is a whore" line made me lol.
Note to self: pay attention at the end of shows when on the floor so you don't almost get taken out by Spencer throwing his drumsticks into the crowd. I was looking up at the time and it seemed very close to me. Also, girls fighting over a drumstick (one that Spencer didn't even toss out, a crewguy did) was disturbing. They settled it by snapping the stick in half.
We ended up having to bolt for the train after the concert, nearly killing poor
jocondite in the process who was a bit dehydrated and sleepdeprived by this point. And this was the time when the uphill walk back to the hotel was unwelcome. Then I had to get up at 7am, creep out as quietly as possible (which isn't all that quiet as it turns out, sorry guys), and head back to the airport for the 9am flight. It was packed, but I was back at work before midday. Tried to get as much done as possible, then in the evening a bunch of fangirls met up for dinner and squee. I was then a party-pooper and took
not_nele and
jocondite home after dinner, because I wanted a relatively normal night's sleep before work on the Friday and the next concert that night :D
