I just had one of the freakiest, scariest experiences of my life - driving through a fucking ICE STORM. IN SYDNEY. WTF???? Sure, we get some really nasty hailstorms, but I'm talking several inches of ice, it looked like fucking snow.

I had to pullover, and my windscreen wipers couldn't move eventually because of the mass of ice. Had to get out, hail/ice still falling, to try and scrape it clear. Chucks are not useful footwear at this point. I've got some photos of my car from once I got home, and I'm sure many photos will turn up of Sydney in this.

I was only a couple of minutes drive from home, but here, only light hail.

I had hoped you'd have made it home - we are just carpetted in ice at the moment. Glad you're safe, anyway.

Glad you were able to pull over & then make it home - things like that are so scary.

Holy shit, glad you're ok! I just had to race out and rescue washing and cats - it wasn't hail or ice but it was a sudden thunderstom with rain so icy it was practically sleet. I can see that I got lucky.

Oh, man, that is incredibly scary - glad you got home safely! GAH. The weather is mad here this weekend, too - I drove down to Hamilton and I swear I didn't make it above seventy until I was, like, ten minutes away because the wind was so bad.

How scary! Just checked the weatherzone forum, and the people there are convinced that was, in fact, sleet. Elsewhere it has started snowing after some hail. Get out the winter woolies, we might be in for some freak weather.

Where was that? We've had nothing up at Hornsby except a very light sprinkle.

Oooh, is that forum likely to find/post photos? Can you link me, I'd love to find some to show people.

I'd wished I'd made it home too - way worse than that hail I had to drive through in NZ.

I have never driven through something like that. And I've never seen that much white stuff on the ground here.

Lindfield. But yeah, I suspect it was a pretty narrow band, I was just unlucky.

They do post photos from all over NSW. I'll link you to page 6 of the thread. there's some photos there of the hail at Concord, but I'm sure more will be added. They also update regularly, so just keep a watch. This is in the 'Breaking Weather' forum at the site.

Thank you :) It was just so freaking bizarre - it was like regular hail mixed with sludgy ice, and there was just so much of it.

(PS got your email)

I would have been terrified, omg. Last night it was raining so hard I thought it was hail and I was freaking out so much. Over just rain! I can't imagine coping with surprise!sludge.

(Yay! I know you were totes disappointed it wasn't really Jesse Lacey.)

It was the heaviest, sludgiest hail I've ever seen. Two inches deep, maybe a little more. And it went on for about 10 minutes I think.

Lindfield featured prominently on 9 news :) Looks like the hail may not have been fully formed.

I did have to drive through a bit of hail in NZ, between Napier and Taupo, in the middle of nowhere. That was a bit ARGH at the time, but nothing to how heavy this was.
