We don't have gas, but my sister will have a gas stove in her new unit. This leaves us unable to decide which is better - an electric kettle, or one you use on the gas stove?

Has anyone had both who could advise? *g*

ETA: Thank you - she read the advice so far, and has decided on an electric kettle :)

Electric kettle all the way. Anything with an auto-off is a huge plus.

Thanks! Auto-off is what decided it for her, I think.

Gas will be cheaper, I expect. I have had both and didn't notice any differences.

Someone else mentioned auto stop which I forgot but from a safety point of view puts the electric kettle ahead of the stove top kettle.

Electric tend to be easier to pour & fill, less risk of burning yourself on the kettle itself, and auto off switch as tapedeck mentioned (my grandfather burnt through a couple before we made him use an electric instead)

Gas is cheaper to run than electric. BUT if you walk away and forget a gas kettle, it will burn out the bottom and assplode, but an electric one just turns off. This is VITAL to me.

She's decided that is very important to her too :)

I now have more chips. CHIPS. Had to drive up today because I suspect it might be the last day of the sale.

I thought, at first, that you were seeking opinons on Kettle chips.

I have a PINK electric jug.

Heee, I am already familiar enough with kettle chips (mmmm, greasy salt'n'vinegar) *g*.

I went back to Wheel and Barrow and bought her more glasses for Christmas, plus lavender tongs, and pink measuring cups and spoons. You'd be proud :D

I think a girlie cheerful kitchen makes food preparation more fun. Pink is as vital as auto-off.

I'll go with electric. I have a gas stove and boiling anything on it is way too long for me.

This entire thread was so useful to me, since my new house also has a gas cook-top!
