Dark Alec and SPN question

Oh sweet mother of god, I'd forgotten about the wet-Alec-in-a-towel-bit. And the way he says

Ahahahaha, Logan and Alec hugging - a telecoercionist made them do it! I love the looks they give each other for the rest of the episode.

Normal's complete and utter crush on Alec is just beautiful - complete with gladiator-themed dreams. Poor Alec looks so disturbed.

"Why consumate two years of unbridled passion, when we can have pasta?" - the way Jensen says "pasta!" will never not slay me.

When Logan see's Alec and Max together (after she's broken up with him), I feel like it's the Simpsons - if you look closely you can actually pinpoint the exact moment his heart breaks in two.

The scene at Max's place where she's making coffee and tells Alec about Ben, and he hugs her, is just the sweetest scene between them.

No wait, that's the scene at the end of Dawg Day Afternoon, when Joshua's friend has been murdered, and Alec and Max hold Joshua, and Alec's kissing Joshua.

Dude, this breeder cult storyline is even stranger than I remembered. I guess the moral of Dark Angel is "breeders are evil"?

OK, huh? I'm sure this has been completely explained elsewhere many many times in SPN fandom, but I'm slow. I'd assumed/misrembered that Sam had been at college for 3-4 years before the pilot, but I've been reading a bunch of fic lately, then rewatched the pilot.

Sam's only been at college for two years? Since that's how long since he's seen Dean. Wouldn't that make him 20 when he started college? And would he already be talking about law school after only two years at college? Then again, everything I know about the American education system, I have learned from tv ;)

On the other hand, I've been reading some AWESOME stories. I must go send some feedback about The 1300 Days by stele3. Long, plotty Dean-fic (set while Sam's at college). Fantastic.

That's actually a mistake, in the pilot. Sam HAS been at college for four years and hasn't seen Dean for as long. When Kripke and co were asked about this they laughed and said it was amusing that people were trying to find meaning in this when really, they'd just screwed up the dates, lol.

Yay, thank you! I was tending to assume that, but then I looked at a fan timeline (that looked pretty comprehensive), and it went with the two years.

Really? There's someone out there who went through all the trouble of putting together a timeline and didn't research the two years thing? That's weird, because I've never seen anybody not take into account that one mistake before. Or maybe it's because I remember the fuss about it from the first season, how everybody was talking about it and trying to interpret it and then Kripke gets asked and laughs it off as a mistake at that Paley thing and boom, every fan's carefully constructed theory on that one goes down in flames. It was kinda funny to see, lol. The whole thing pretty much confirmed for me the fact that Kripke and co were never going to be really good at the whole consistency thing. *g*

I like the show, but I've never really been involved in the fandom, so unless I've seen someone talking about it on my f-list (and paid attention), I probably wouldn't have seen it. Which is why I assumed this had already been resolved and would know the answer ;)

Wow, thanks for the link. It's both pretty amazing in the way it's so detailed and kind of shoddy because it didn't take into account some pretty important and official information. It's still very useful so yay! :-)

In my mind, Sam started college at the usual age - 18, and had stayed in touch with Dean the first couple of years, but then something happened, and they had a falling out, and they haven't talked in 2 years. Technically, in the pilot, Sam had taken his LSATs and is applying to law schools, which is what you do in your 4th year of college. They messed up. And Kripke admitted to messing up, which is sad, because it would've been way cooler if he'd said there's a hidden, secret meaning behind those two 'lost' years, and gotten all mysterious about it.

Even if Sam had taken classes over the summer (instead of working to, like, earn money), he still would've only managed to do 3 years (6 semesters) in two. Which... I guess would make sense, so that in November 2005, he's in his third actual year at Stanford, but on his 7th semester.

Still, though, the reason Kripke gave is that they originally wanted Sam to be a junior, after 2 years of college, but test audiences (or whoever) didn't think Jared looked like a believable 20-year-old (he looked older) and, I guess, they wanted to have him drink alcohol without a conflict, so they made him a year older.

The thing is: '22 years ago' makes Sam 22.5 years old in November of his senior year, which means he'd be 23 by the time he gets his undergrad degree. Which means that Sam started kindergarten/school a year later than most kids, which makes sense to me, that John wouldn't have wanted to let Sam out of his sight, though I'm thinking the same rule applied to Dean, because I have trouble believing that less than a year after Mary's death, John would've been okay enough to start leading an approximation of a normal life and let Dean start kindergarten on time.

I... may have possibly spent a bit too much time talking about this with stellamira. Honest, I didn't just come up with this on the spot. *facepalms*

I think the exact Kripke quote on the 2 year/4 year thing is: "It's just a mistake. Tee-hee." (From the Paley convention q&a stuff.)
