recs sought; Sentinel musings
Mar. 28th, 2007 09:59 pmI know this is the lazy option, but I throw myself upon the mercy and good taste of my friendslist.
I like SPN RPS, but haven't actually read much, so recs, pretty please? I love me some J2, but am open to other possibilities. Pimp your own, rec me authors, link me to rec lists - anything is much appreciated :)

I've been reading and re-reading stuff from a bunch of fandoms lately, and the difference in predominant style/tone can be really striking at times (and not just cause of the difference between source materials - just fannish trends).
So I was pondering - if The Sentinel was a current show today, how do you think the fandom would differ? I suspect it'd get a bit of an RPS contingent, more incestfic and more stories where Jim and Blair actually turn into their spirit animals (and probably fuck). Sadly, for the show to exist these days, Blair would either be the girl I first thought the character was (after reading a newspaper review of the show), or they'd be brothers. Oh those wacky Nineties - simpler days when two men could live together for 4 seasons and not one someone-wackily-assumes-they're-gay moment.

Date: 2007-03-28 12:13 pm (UTC)That show was so damn naive. And terrible. Don't forget terrible.
I love imagining how the creators of SPN and Heroes might have sat around a desk saying "Let's make them brothers, that'll stop those filthy slashers! Muauauah!"
Six months later, the same suits are clustered around a table going "Shiiiit."

Date: 2007-03-28 09:32 pm (UTC)However, I can't really see Supernatural or Heroes where those relationships are between non-related people, it's too key to the show.
Then again, I don't slash either pair, so clearly the plan worked on me *g*.

Date: 2007-03-28 12:21 pm (UTC)There's a couple of good comms to check out for spn rps,
I've got a load of fics saved on my delicious account here: http://del.icio.us/madders - tagged by pairing. Just steer clear of the Dean/Sam etc pairings if that's not your cup of tea!
And finally, if you want to read a J2 with bonus added Chris Kane and Steve Carlson, there's always my fic I posted the other week here: http://community.livejournal.com/maddersfic/9854.html
That oughta keep you going for some time ;o)

Date: 2007-03-28 12:27 pm (UTC)And Sam and Dean had what, six or seven eps before someone wackily assumed that? *g*
I think you're right, though, about the RPS contingent, for sure. The incest factor? Maybe. (I'm having horrible visions of Naomi/Blair(/Jim), now. *scrubs brain with bleach*) The animal spirit thing? Yep. Actually, I think you saw more of that toward the end of the series run, though I'd bowed out by that time, so I'm not entirely sure.
I know at one point, early in, I typed up about two pages of RPS for Richard and Garrett, and the couple of people I told about it were *horrified*. "ohmygod, you can't DO that!" So I deleted the file (I think I did, anyway). Now? Hee!
Funny, isn't it? The way fannish trends come and go (and come. *coughs*).

Date: 2007-03-28 09:27 pm (UTC)Yeah, fic is horrible and immoral and horrific - but all the gossip and innuendo and jokes about the two of them is just fine ::eyerolls::

Date: 2007-03-28 01:09 pm (UTC)Some people in TS fandom seems to have one foot firmly rooted in the past. Old writers that are worshiped as the best out there, and people who think the only way to communicate is through a list. If the show was on now I'd imagine there'd be loads of active LJ comms, for the actors, slash and het both. There'd be much more rps, because LJ seems more tolerant of the genre than the list culture, and the people that like that kind of stuff could group and talk together without running the risk of being classed as a character raping deviant.
I should have that on an icon really. Hi, I'm Terri, I morally rape when I write rps.
Also, the comms would probably phase out the cliques, the lists where you say hello and not one person replies. *is still bitter*
Really, I think the whole feel of the fandom would be different. I'm very much on the edges of the TS fandom on LJ, and left the lists behind long ago, but the comms that are on here seem to be active, and that would be even more so if the series was made now.

Date: 2007-03-28 09:31 pm (UTC)Either way, I suspect there'd be more if it was around today because incestfic is so much more acceptable.

Date: 2007-03-28 10:36 pm (UTC)What there is of the Malfoy incest seems to be more about the power differential and just wanting to completely fuck up Draco -- which would mean that the kink is more about the hurt/comfort aspect. The 'cest is the vehicle to get to that.
And like that's something that didn't happen in TS. I'm trying to think about who it was that used to write the stories, but the name escapes me. Pah. Oh, well.
I don't think it's actually so much that 'cest fic is more acceptable -- though maybe it is -- it's that the standard conventions that make a slash pairing just seem to be happening between brothers on some shows.
Especially, in something like SPN, The brothers Winchester have such a fucked up relationship in so many ways that a lot of people can see potential for something happening because they are already outside many of the taboo boundaries that society sets. Slippery slope and all that.
Then again there are probably more people who don't see it or want to explore it as a vehicle for angst or h/c or something else and just write gen. SPN has a lot of gen, it's the het in the fandom that's being done the disservice.

Date: 2007-03-29 01:10 am (UTC)I just think incest fic (and RPS) are far more accepted in fandom than they were ten years ago. I remember uproar in XF fandom when I was new to it (about ten years ago) about stories with dark Fox/Samantha themes.
I'm not saying TS would have as much 'cest fic as something like SPN does, I just think with the way fandom has changed, that it's likely that there would be more RPS and incest stories if it was a current show now. YMMV.
