I know this is the lazy option, but I throw myself upon the mercy and good taste of my friendslist.

I like SPN RPS, but haven't actually read much, so recs, pretty please? I love me some J2, but am open to other possibilities. Pimp your own, rec me authors, link me to rec lists - anything is much appreciated :)

* * * * *

I've been reading and re-reading stuff from a bunch of fandoms lately, and the difference in predominant style/tone can be really striking at times (and not just cause of the difference between source materials - just fannish trends).

So I was pondering - if The Sentinel was a current show today, how do you think the fandom would differ? I suspect it'd get a bit of an RPS contingent, more incestfic and more stories where Jim and Blair actually turn into their spirit animals (and probably fuck). Sadly, for the show to exist these days, Blair would either be the girl I first thought the character was (after reading a newspaper review of the show), or they'd be brothers. Oh those wacky Nineties - simpler days when two men could live together for 4 seasons and not one someone-wackily-assumes-they're-gay moment.

....But the APRON!

That show was so damn naive. And terrible. Don't forget terrible.

I love imagining how the creators of SPN and Heroes might have sat around a desk saying "Let's make them brothers, that'll stop those filthy slashers! Muauauah!"

Six months later, the same suits are clustered around a table going "Shiiiit."

Before the show aired there was a small article promoting the new season shows in SFX magazine. It said something along the lines of making the SPN boys brothers "wouldn't stop the slashers." Oh, how right they were ;)

Heeee :)

However, I can't really see Supernatural or Heroes where those relationships are between non-related people, it's too key to the show.

Then again, I don't slash either pair, so clearly the plan worked on me *g*.

Recs I can do- there are literally hundreds of fics out there, and more every day, so I won't try and give you specific fics (although I can if you want me to *g*) but I'll point you in the general direction of some good places on lj to look...*g*

There's a couple of good comms to check out for spn rps, [livejournal.com profile] cw_rps which has different pairings across the CW, as is [livejournal.com profile] wb_rps.

[livejournal.com profile] padacklesrps is just for J2 fic. [livejournal.com profile] spn_real is for rps featuring any of the supernatural boys, and [livejournal.com profile] spnnewsletter is good to watch, because they do literally list every spn-related thing, by sub-heading, so you can just check under rps.

I've got a load of fics saved on my delicious account here: http://del.icio.us/madders - tagged by pairing. Just steer clear of the Dean/Sam etc pairings if that's not your cup of tea!

And finally, if you want to read a J2 with bonus added Chris Kane and Steve Carlson, there's always my fic I posted the other week here: http://community.livejournal.com/maddersfic/9854.html

That oughta keep you going for some time ;o)

Oh those wacky Nineties - simpler days when two men could live together for 4 seasons and not one someone-wackily-assumes-they're-gay moment.

And Sam and Dean had what, six or seven eps before someone wackily assumed that? *g*

I think you're right, though, about the RPS contingent, for sure. The incest factor? Maybe. (I'm having horrible visions of Naomi/Blair(/Jim), now. *scrubs brain with bleach*) The animal spirit thing? Yep. Actually, I think you saw more of that toward the end of the series run, though I'd bowed out by that time, so I'm not entirely sure.

I know at one point, early in, I typed up about two pages of RPS for Richard and Garrett, and the couple of people I told about it were *horrified*. "ohmygod, you can't DO that!" So I deleted the file (I think I did, anyway). Now? Hee!

Funny, isn't it? The way fannish trends come and go (and come. *coughs*).

There was certainly some Ellison incest floating around, don't know if I ever saw Blair/Naomi, thank goodness :)

Yeah, fic is horrible and immoral and horrific - but all the gossip and innuendo and jokes about the two of them is just fine ::eyerolls::

I was going to mention [livejournal.com profile] esorlachar's recs, but I see someone beat me to it.

You can also check out some of the recs people made for [livejournal.com profile] spn_acppreciate here.

[livejournal.com profile] indysaur's college AU is fun, it's hard to go wrong with [livejournal.com profile] winterlive or [livejournal.com profile] estrella30, and I read a fabulous story called, I think, Texas, by [livejournal.com profile] brynwulf recently.

[livejournal.com profile] amothea also posts recs frequently, and [livejournal.com profile] destina has a great recs page.

If TS was around now the fandom would be much bigger on LJ. Which would cut down on the doom sayers on mailing lists wailing about how bad LJ is for the fandom, and how they'd never set foot on LJ and just, shut up already!

Some people in TS fandom seems to have one foot firmly rooted in the past. Old writers that are worshiped as the best out there, and people who think the only way to communicate is through a list. If the show was on now I'd imagine there'd be loads of active LJ comms, for the actors, slash and het both. There'd be much more rps, because LJ seems more tolerant of the genre than the list culture, and the people that like that kind of stuff could group and talk together without running the risk of being classed as a character raping deviant.

I should have that on an icon really. Hi, I'm Terri, I morally rape when I write rps.

Also, the comms would probably phase out the cliques, the lists where you say hello and not one person replies. *is still bitter*

Really, I think the whole feel of the fandom would be different. I'm very much on the edges of the TS fandom on LJ, and left the lists behind long ago, but the comms that are on here seem to be active, and that would be even more so if the series was made now.

My fic (which is clearly amazing) is: right here. (http://phaballa.livejournal.com/tag/going+to+hell) It's all clearly labeled in the headers as to pairing and so on. Uh. Lots of AUs. And weird shit. I write weird shit. But SPN RPS is sorely lacking in good AUs and Weird Shit, so I feel like it's kind of my duty.

My recs are: right here (http://phaballa.livejournal.com/tag/recs). Again, this is a mix of fandoms, but mostly SPN RPS, and clearly labeled.

I also rec at [livejournal.com profile] spn_themes which has 5 or 6 reccers and updates at least once a week with new recs. Enjoy!

I have some CWRPF (mostly J2, with the occasional JDM thrown in) on [livejournal.com profile] t_fic. In addition to the people mentioned above, [livejournal.com profile] wendy recs fairly often, and has a big list of SPN RPS here (http://wendy.livejournal.com/1154684.html). It's from last summer, so it'll point you to some of the stuff that's gotten buried, because, holy cow, this is a prolific fandom. It's crazy hard to keep up but it's such a nice problem to have.

All the stories that passed my stringent internal censor are in my memories (http://www.livejournal.com/tools/memories.bml?keyword=spn%2Fcw+fic&user=madame_d&sortby=des), sorted by J2 (and sometimes, with little descriptor notes), Jared/Chad, and the rest = SPN non-RPS.

I'm sure you've been given most of them already somehow, but every story I've ever read that I've loved, I've made sure to keep in my memories here. It's mostly Jared/Jensen, but there are some Rosenbaum, Welling, Christian Kane... stories in there, though. There's even a George Clooney/Anderson Cooper one listed but obviously, that's not SPN RPS, lol.

There's already incest fic in the fandom. I don't see it getting any larger even if it was on tv today, given that in the majority of the cases, people are writing it because of the relationships and subtext that exist between the brothers ala SPN, not for the kink factor.

Date: 2007-03-28 09:31 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] erilyn.livejournal.com
Given what I've seen of incest fic in HP fandom, there are a lot of people who write it for the kink *g*.

Either way, I suspect there'd be more if it was around today because incestfic is so much more acceptable.

Date: 2007-03-28 10:36 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] sinden.livejournal.com
I don't think the kink is so much incest in HP as the twins really (if you're specifically talking about Fred and George]. Plus, you could say there is subtext for it in the way that Fred and George finish each others sentences, etc etc. The take most people seem to have is that, in a way, they're almost one person. Not whole without the other. Sure, there's those that are in it for the pure 'cest kink, but I think that's actually a lot less than you'd think.

What there is of the Malfoy incest seems to be more about the power differential and just wanting to completely fuck up Draco -- which would mean that the kink is more about the hurt/comfort aspect. The 'cest is the vehicle to get to that.

And like that's something that didn't happen in TS. I'm trying to think about who it was that used to write the stories, but the name escapes me. Pah. Oh, well.

I don't think it's actually so much that 'cest fic is more acceptable -- though maybe it is -- it's that the standard conventions that make a slash pairing just seem to be happening between brothers on some shows.

Especially, in something like SPN, The brothers Winchester have such a fucked up relationship in so many ways that a lot of people can see potential for something happening because they are already outside many of the taboo boundaries that society sets. Slippery slope and all that.

Then again there are probably more people who don't see it or want to explore it as a vehicle for angst or h/c or something else and just write gen. SPN has a lot of gen, it's the het in the fandom that's being done the disservice.

Date: 2007-03-29 01:10 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] erilyn.livejournal.com
I was actually referring to the everyone/everyone fic I've seen in HP fandom - something like twincest or some Malfoycest I can see what people are exploring, but I'm assume kink as the basis for a lot of the other random incest pairings.

I just think incest fic (and RPS) are far more accepted in fandom than they were ten years ago. I remember uproar in XF fandom when I was new to it (about ten years ago) about stories with dark Fox/Samantha themes.

I'm not saying TS would have as much 'cest fic as something like SPN does, I just think with the way fandom has changed, that it's likely that there would be more RPS and incest stories if it was a current show now. YMMV.
