Video-editing help

erilynOne of the things I'm looking forward to doing more of on this new computer is some video editing projects, both fannish and familial. However, I'm trying out Ulead VideoStudio 10 and am about ready to tear my hair out in frustration. It's so incredibly slow - I click on an image I've placed in the timeline, and it'll take at least 3-4 seconds for the program to respond, and switch the menus over etc. I have no idea why - this is a fairly good new computer with dual-core processors and lots of RAM. Anything else video-related that I've used on it (like VirtualDub or NeroVision) is much much faster than on the previous machine.
Any suggestions on what the problem might be? Or what other programs I could give a try? I used to have (a legitimately purchased but now oldish version of) Cyberlink PowerDirector that was quite useful, but had been hoping to move to something with a bit more control and options.
I must be insane though, after making my poplove video, I told myself to never try making a songvid, the editing was bad enough on it without trying to set it to music. Yet here I am, trying to make a Torchwood vid.
