Local Georgette Heyer fans may be interested in this:

ABC, Tuesday 1.55am - Reluctant Widow.

It's not a great adaption, but there are some fun moments (as far as I can recall) and it does explain why there aren't more films based on her novels (apparently she refused after this). Pity, there's so many of her books I'd love to see good movies made from (Talisman Ring, for starters).

Oh wow. I didn't know they'd made any Heyer into films. So much love for those books. So so much. I want to see Venetia onscreen. It'd be fabulous.

*sulks because there's nothing on telly in NZ*

I pick Talisman Ring as one of the ones I'd most like to see, cause I think it's got a good film-suitable mix of romance and action (plus, it's one of my faves).

But you aren't missing much by not seeing this film. I was damning-with-faint-praise in my description (by the end, it bares little resemblance to the book, as does the heroine).

I've heard so much about this author, from everyone. Question: If I wanted to pick a book up to see what she's all about, which one would you choose? (I'm currently abusing my library card and I need some recs lol)

She's just wonderful. Jane Austin but easier to read.

I'd start with Venetia, The Grand Sophy, The Nonesuch, The Unknown Ajax and Black Sheep. Well, those are my favourites anyway.

Talisman Ring is one of the three Heyer Historical Romances I don't have.

*pout*

I think I'm going to start off asking potential friends whether they like Heyer. It seems to guarantee niceness, intelligence and appreciation of banter.

I've been amazed to realise how many people in fandom love Heyer :)

Those are all good ones, and I'd also mention These Old Shades (also Devil's Cub, but read Shades first), Cotillion, Regency Buck, Arabella, and The Masqueraders as amongst my favourites.

But have you read it? Either way, Ebay or Amazon marketplace could be your friend :)

It's quite remarkable how widespread Heyer love is in fandom.

I have read it. My mum got me hooked on Heyer when I was about 12 and she has it.

But I think I'm mixing it up with The Reluctant Widow and The Toll Gate. And I've been haunting Amazon marketplace for that and the Unknown Ajax for a while. I have a copy of Ajax... but it's missing the last two pages!

The first Heyer I ever read was These Old Shades, and if you like genderf*ck The Masqueraders is FAB. In fact, they're mostly all good (the only slightly boring onces are the books with the dribbly ingenue heroines).

You might as well not have a copy at all, how annoying!

I'm pretty sure mine was either TOS or Masqueraders...I'm leaning more towards TOS. My mum, sister and I all love them - thanks to dad inheriting his love for them from his mum. Three generations of Heyer fans!
