the first concert report
Jan. 31st, 2006 07:41 pmI was having problems sitting down and making myself do this, despite having time (
canadiankracka and
not_nele being out and about without me). Then I started watching last week's SGA as procrastination, and 5 minutes of that made this look like the more fun way of spending my time ;)
eponymous has already got a better concert report up, as does
isetadrift here, but here's my view.
Oh. My. God. It was amazing. They sounded fantastic, don't recall any bad notes being hit at all. The dancing, the staging, the setlist (well, I would have dropped a couple of ballads *g*) were all great. And so so so much fun (and slashy). They are all insane goofballs, who sing to each other at every opportunity, and it's rather frustrating at times, trying to watch them all at once, cause if you focus on any one person for too long (like, seconds), you're gonna miss something adorable on the other side of the stage. At this concert, I can't really say I watched one guy much more than any of the others, but I probably saw Kevin the least. Not that I don't like watching him, there was just too much to see! And this concert went long - they just never shut up!
But to begin at the beginning, we took the trip back into the city for dinner and to meet up with the others, and then returned in time to shop for merch and avoid the opening act. They were searching bags, so frantic camera hiding (Lex's went up her skirt, very neatly), but that turned out to be unnecessary, as the only cameras they banned were professional-looking ones. I bought a program book and Sphynkter tshirt, then nearly died before the show started, when we found our seats. I knew they were fifth row, but we were almost directly in front of the middle microphone. It was so close, I hardly looked at the big screens all night. The Entertainment Centre was pretty full (though it wasn't a sellout). But the atmosphere was great and the audience very responsive. We were sitting with
thebitchtrolls, while the others were together the row ahead, not far away.
Brian is so freaking adorable. While singing gorgeously, he mugs for the crowd, singles people out and responds to them, interacts with all the Boys so much, and never ever stops. Anyone who doesn't love him lots after seeing him live is dead inside ;) There seemed to be so much good interaction between him and Howie (ass slapping (by Brian on Howie, with Brian warning him "to be careful, Howard"), chatting and laughing, quick hand slaps) but I think it's just that I expected the adorable stuff with Nick and AJ more. He and Nick were all over each other at times, and Brian and AJ could sing to each other all night, and they (and me) would be happy.

AJ looked so good. He's lean and fit and fucking sexy, sounds great, and slips so easily from intense to goofy, pulling faces at the crowd and the Boys. Kevin is gorgeous and needs to stop wearing hats that hide this (and his hair which is growing out so nicely). Like I said, probably watched him the least, but lord, when he gets intense, you can't tear your eyes away.

Oh Nick. You big, happy enthusiastic boy. He's beautiful, and funny, and I love him lots too. Especially when he grabs AJ by his tie, and pulls him offstage. And finally Howie. I don't have a favourite BSB (this was established when I was stumped into silence last Wednesday when asked this by an English fan, Lisa. I finally answered Chris), but sometimes I suspect it seems like Howie is my favourite, since I like him a lot, when he annoys others or is overlooked. He cracked me up with his literal choreography, cheesiness, wiggly wiggly little hips, his voice, his delight in performing with his Boys.

The choreography to The Call is both better and sillier in person. Parts of it were really cracking me up. I'd already seen the Boys in person at soundcheck, but it doesn't matter, the buildup and entrance are still electrifying. I had earplugs in when they came out, from both the music and the crowd, but took them out after a little while, and found it was ok.

Beautiful Woman started with the accompanying happy cry from Lex: hopping Nicky! I've liked this song since it first leaked, and loved seeing it live. Brian slapped both AJ and Howie's asses during the song with his mic (thanks to
isetadrift for the timing).

Nick hid behind Marcus, and Brian had to drag him out by his ear to come play Climbing the Walls. Brian did the most adorable spiel about how little Nick was when the group started, and how high his voice was (complete with impersonations), then about how he's a man now, with a deep manly voice.

I Still was performed as a love song from Brian to the other Boys. He went around to each of them in turn, singing about how he still needed them. I nearly died, especially after singing intensely to each other for a bit, he and Howie suddenly did the hand movements and facial expressions of 'oh, that's right, we're straight and just good friends'. But it also had Nick dropping his microphone, it rolling across the stage and him managing to recover it and launch into song just in time. Much to everyone's amusement, particularly Brian and Howie.
I Want It That Way went off! AJ was holding his microphone as a phallic substitute when they stand with their heads down before the song. He went up into the crowd, but they were very well-behaved, as they were when Brian went up into crowd. There was so much too watch, that unless I'd had my eye on the Boy in question, they vanished off the stage without realising *g*.

I thought Howie was gonna have an aneurysm during Show Me the Meaning, hitting and holding that note (you know the one), especially when they showed a closeup on the bigscreen, there was this vein on his forehead that was just HUGE. But he sounded damn good. I love the dancing during Larger than Life, it's one of my favourite songs anyway. And the lightshow is very effective. I love Siberia, and I love the cheesiness of the snow. I'm not ashamed to admit that I revel in the cheese of it all at times (probably why I like Howie more than many people do). I missed Nick's tattoo moment, which was probably good for my mood.

Oh, the hat dance for All I Have To Give! But I was disappointed that none of them dropped their hats during it. Damn, but AJ can wail, as he gets to show off during and especially at the end of I'll Never Break Your Heart. Loved the diva moment when Kevin drapes the coat around him at the end, but not as much as AJ pausing before the last bit and then waggling his figure when the audience starts cheering and applauding before he's finished. His grin just lights up the arena.
And then, one of my favourite (yet annoying a bit) parts of the entire show. Nick starts to go into his normal spiel about AJ, but gets completely derailed by the others. They talk about what they did on their days off, sheilas (grrrr, though worth it for Nick asking Kevin to use it in a sentence), AJ got the crowd doing Aussie Aussie Aussie Oy Oy Oy (then Brian came and did it better aka faster, then Nick did it too later), Nick rambled about Land Down (and some gets sung) and the Around the World trip, Nick loses track of what he should be doing, shows how rockstar he is, and then introduces us to his "girlfriend", Helga the guitar. Which lead to one of the most awkward moments of the night, because as he picked it up, he banged it or something, and Howie(!) told him not to abuse his girlfriend! Which led to Nick yelling that he doesn't abuse his girlfriend. The audience wasn't sure whether to laugh or not. But I got most of it, so watch it yourself *g*.

If I didn't love Just Want You to Know already, I'd have to after their performance. There's nothing better than the Boys rocking out, with Nick on guitar. And the fireworks nearly knocked everyone off their feet, including me (even though I knew they were coming soon). During Drowning, Howie looked pissy, AJ and Nick had a nice little chat, and Kevin sang to Brian in a most un-cousinly fashion. Crawling Back To You featured split-screen Howie and Brian, despite being at different ends of the higher stage, so Brian was using the camera to play tricks. Dork *g*. S
Quit Playing Games was just adorable. They were all over the place, and there was some great Howie/Nick moments to make me extra happy. At one point, Nick had been drumming, then came over to sing to Howie and annoy him with the drumstick. AJ followed Nick, but Nick didn't realise this until AJ was right behind him, and there was practically an AJ/Nick/Howie sandwich on stage in front of me.

When Howie and Nick went up the stairs to do their little dance (which I was primed for thanks to bootlegs), they had a little fight first, with Nick almost kissing Howie at one point. But when the time came, they went seamlessly into their Saturday Night Fever dance, complete with Howie's jazz hands. And then Nick gave us a little bootyshake soon after. And then at the end of the song, he grabbed Howie, and they practically skipped off arm in arm.

I'd completely forgotten about them marking Nick's birthday during the concert, too overwhelmed by everything else, so the Boys took me by as much surprise as Nick. He started to sing Weird World and then the music and the other Boys stop, but Nick the professional keeps going until he realises they're calling his name and cackling with glee. He threw a mock hissy fit, while they laughed at him and wheeled out the cake. Howie announced that Nick was "26 and never been kissed" and Brian nearly filled my hollered request of "kiss him". I'm owning up to that since you can hear me on the video. And we all sang him Happy Birthday and he stuck his face in the cake, but just watch the video rather than reading my description :)
+ Nick's birthday cake - 55 meg
I loved the cheesy but sweet grin that AJ flashed when Nick sings "Don't let them take away your beautiful smile" in Weird World (once they did it for real). It looked so amazing when Kevin told everyone to get phones (and glowsticks) out for Incomplete.
(Nick checks out the damage to his microphone *g*)

Everybody went off, of course! The remix, the dancing, the fireworks, Nick and Brian shoving each other around, the faces they were pulling - the crowd response was amazing. I was tired (from the day, and the show, which went over two hours we think), and while the videos between sets had been nice breaks, it was simultaneously a relief and very sad for the show to be over. We reunited with the others (the seats weren't together), and trekked back to the station, everyone sharing and comparing stories (hardly every great moment was seen by us all, cause of how much was going on). Didn't get enough sleep (not the fault of our wonderful hostesses, thanks again!) and headed back to Sydney on Sunday, but that's another story!
I reserve the right to edit and add to this once I check Lex's notes again *g*. Sydney and other adventures will have to wait until I come back from Melbourne, I'm afraid.
Please don't link to this report on message boards or communities, I'm gonna post myself when I'm back and share the files around. Definitely don't link to the files themselves. Hope you enjoy!

Date: 2006-01-31 08:55 am (UTC)The abusing his girlfriend bit was one of the weirdest things EVER. I can't believe it was Howie who started it (we weren't sure after the show, until I watched the video).

Yeah, we all kind of gasped - they might make joking references about not liking Paris (this came up in soundcheck), but to joke about the abuse rumours was rather unexpected.

I'll get my photos done sometime. Btw, I meant to ask you, what settings did you have your camera on? I have quite a few with blur, and the flash takes ages to charge, I'm contemplating taking it off auto or something.

I grabbed the videos, thanks alot!
