I watched the most recent VM ep last night. I love this show SO MUCH.

I was looking up travel info the other day, and came across these cool map overlays comparing the relative size and distances between places for Australia v USA and Australia v Europe. I've seen things like them before, but I'm gonna post them here so I've got them for reference. We often joke about tourists asking questions like "Can I drive from Sydney to Perth in a day?"[1], but it also helps me visualise the US and Europe better.

I was talking to [livejournal.com profile] trumpeterofdoom, and I commented that the silly interviews like the VIVA thing I posted this morning and Cup My Ballots are so much better than the straightforward ones where they get asked all the same questions everytime (sobriety! what have you been doing since the last album! being a father!) that we can recite their answers along with them. Not that this was a groundbreaking discovery by me, but I had to explain why she then killed me with this interview (oh, the money I'd pay to see it).

JM: Interviewer: what's being sober like?
JM: AJ: throws hands in air HOMOSEXUAL!
JM: Nick: ...
JM: Kevin:...AJ, we talked about this.
Me: Howie: Did I mention I have a girlfriend?
JM: AJ: HOMOSEXUAL!
Me: Brian humps Howie's leg
JM: AJ jumps on Howie

AJ should answer every question by yelling HOMOSEXUAL at his bandmates for not apparent reason (see VIVA clip if you haven't already).

[1] The answer is HELL NO!

This made me snort my coffee in a bad way. ;-)

Okay, something like Brisbane to Sydney I could see people wondering, but Perth? ARE YOU A MORON? Come on, yes maps are exactly truly to scale, but they're not THAT far off.

I think the problem is that they don't see maps like this, and just don't realise that how big we are. Cause the middle is pretty unpopulated (we've only got 20 million all up, and 90% of them are within 100km of the coast).

But yes, there are many many jokes made about people's complete unfamiliarity with Australia *g*.

We are a pretty big place, the perceptions people have of Australia always crack me up. You know they could try driving but I doubt you'd ever see them again!

Hahaha! I so need to download that clip when I get home. I can't believe I missed that! I love those boys for being so free these days about what they do and say.

Oh yes, the people (Aussies and visitors) who just go driving out in the centre without being prepared ::shudder::

Seriously, they love us, to be so goofy and fun :)

Hurrah veronica! That show is renewing my faith in TV. When's the last time there's been a show where the first season was amazing and the second has you seriously struggling with which was better?

And once again I feel an affinity for Australia through my Canadian-ness. People visiting toronto are all, "I think we'll drive to edmonton tomorrow," and I'm all, "...no."

Just because the land isn't full of people doesn't mean it isn't there, you silly folk.

I know, I was so worried at how they'd manage in the second season, but am loving it so much! Except not enough Weevil ;)

Hey, my sister and her (then)boyfriend drove from Vancouver to PEI and back again.

Over weeks/months! *g*

Or even if they realise that it will take a few days, there's occasionally people who have to be rescued/found dead cause they don't do their research into what driving across the middle of Australia is like ::headdesk::

And sometimes, they're Australians.

"Can I drive from Sydney to Perth in a day?"

You could always say yes, but explain that for that, a day should be the length of a Martian or Neptunian day. ;)

Oh, very cool maps. Useful for me, as whilst I have a good idea of Australia and Europe, I have no clue about the scale of the US.

There again, the size of a country is all relative to the efficiency of its public transport system. Witness the UK. ;)

That's a very good measure *g*. I wonder if a US v Europe one exists (well, it must somewhere, I should try and find it)...
