weird world
Nov. 15th, 2005 04:49 pmWhoa.
Whoa.
I joined Weird World (the BSB fanclub) last week, my vote of optimism about Aussie dates being announced soon and there being soundcheck parties for them (it's 95% of the reason I joined). Sidenote: a concert has been announced for Manila, and it matches the dates given by the girl who posted the Aussie dates, so yay!
But anyway, the fanclub. And the message board, which I visited for the first time today (yes, I am procrastinating like crazy). But why didn't anyone mention that THEY HAVE A FAN FICTION SECTION! ON THE OFFICIAL MESSAGE BOARD!
This is my mind, boggling.
I know Nsync did that contest with AOL where people wrote fanfiction, but I'm still deeply surprised there's a special area for it on the official BSB message board.

Date: 2005-11-15 05:53 am (UTC)You know what's almost as weird? The Sideshow action figure company has a fanfiction contest for Buffy stuff. This after all the hell the fansites went through dealing with cease-and-desist stuff from Fox, back when the show was airing. Freakydeaky, man.

Date: 2005-11-15 06:11 am (UTC)...idunno, everyone's gone over the legality of fanfic 50 thousand times, but in the end, I think, it's only around at the sufferance of those in charge of the source material, right?
And in boyband rps, the starting point is little teenies writing down their backstreet daydreams, which, really, how silly would they look if they took issue with that? It's those fantasies that power the boyband machine, so it's only smart to sanction it, right? I'm assuming all the fanfic is het and PG at most, 'cause, y'know, official board.
Idunno, just talking out my butt. I should get to bed, but now I want to see what all the rest of the commenters say. Hee.

The phrasing annoys me, because slash can be PG-13, but I'd have been even more shocked if it was allowed.

Date: 2005-11-15 06:31 am (UTC)Which reminds me of a completely new pet peeve! Yo, there's this new wave of people I've found writing fic, and they keep rating things waaaaaaaaay too high. There's some stuff at ff100 (at least, the bsb stuff) that's being called nc-17 when it is clearly, CLEARLY not. Like, inexplicit mutually assisted masturbation! is getting nc-17! And it's better to be safe than sorry, I guess, but what if a person's looking forward to the nc-17 and is a bit dissatisfied not getting it?
and that's me going off-topic...all I wanted to say is that apparantly, with some as of yet undetermined group of people, if it's same-sex, no matter what it is, the rating automatically goes up two levels. So a G becomes a PG-13, a PG-13 becomes a NC-17...it's damned frustrating, I'll tell you what.
oof. That one's been waiting a while to come out. Heh.

Date: 2005-11-15 06:37 am (UTC)And sadly, there are many people, even in fandom, who believe that all slash (even mentioning anything gay) equals NC-17. And lo, when I rule the world, such people will be smited (smote?).

Date: 2005-11-16 01:37 am (UTC)Dear Nick,
Seriously, babe. All we want is official dates so we can start planning. Is that too much to ask? I promise if you hold a press conference and let us know soon, I'll give you a
