Whoa.

Whoa.

I joined Weird World (the BSB fanclub) last week, my vote of optimism about Aussie dates being announced soon and there being soundcheck parties for them (it's 95% of the reason I joined). Sidenote: a concert has been announced for Manila, and it matches the dates given by the girl who posted the Aussie dates, so yay!

But anyway, the fanclub. And the message board, which I visited for the first time today (yes, I am procrastinating like crazy). But why didn't anyone mention that THEY HAVE A FAN FICTION SECTION! ON THE OFFICIAL MESSAGE BOARD!

This is my mind, boggling.

I know Nsync did that contest with AOL where people wrote fanfiction, but I'm still deeply surprised there's a special area for it on the official BSB message board.

Whoa.

You know what's almost as weird? The Sideshow action figure company has a fanfiction contest for Buffy stuff. This after all the hell the fansites went through dealing with cease-and-desist stuff from Fox, back when the show was airing. Freakydeaky, man.

That's weird in it's own twisted little way. Oh, the pain Fox caused with Buffy and X-Files.

So, I think the more important question here is what kind of stuff is being posted there?

Dude, my first thought as well!

...idunno, everyone's gone over the legality of fanfic 50 thousand times, but in the end, I think, it's only around at the sufferance of those in charge of the source material, right?

And in boyband rps, the starting point is little teenies writing down their backstreet daydreams, which, really, how silly would they look if they took issue with that? It's those fantasies that power the boyband machine, so it's only smart to sanction it, right? I'm assuming all the fanfic is het and PG at most, 'cause, y'know, official board.

Idunno, just talking out my butt. I should get to bed, but now I want to see what all the rest of the commenters say. Hee.

You described the sorts of stories very well. I just had a second look at the rules of the board, and this time noticed that slash was specifically banned.

1. All Fan Fic submitted to the Weird World Fan Club Message Board should be PG-13. This means the stories told must not contain: descriptions of explicit sex, strong language, violence or slash.

I'm actually surprised they went so far as pg-13. Do they have a lower age limit for joining the fanclub? Thinking 13, obviously.

I can't remember, but I suspect so, they wouldn't want to be responsible for making sure the content was always appropriate for really young children (the whole site, not just fanfic board).

Baaaaaaaaaad Mary-Sues is all I found before I ran away. Though I just checked the rules of the board again, and I hadn't noticed the last word before.

The phrasing annoys me, because slash can be PG-13, but I'd have been even more shocked if it was allowed.

Which reminds me of a completely new pet peeve! Yo, there's this new wave of people I've found writing fic, and they keep rating things waaaaaaaaay too high. There's some stuff at ff100 (at least, the bsb stuff) that's being called nc-17 when it is clearly, CLEARLY not. Like, inexplicit mutually assisted masturbation! is getting nc-17! And it's better to be safe than sorry, I guess, but what if a person's looking forward to the nc-17 and is a bit dissatisfied not getting it?

and that's me going off-topic...all I wanted to say is that apparantly, with some as of yet undetermined group of people, if it's same-sex, no matter what it is, the rating automatically goes up two levels. So a G becomes a PG-13, a PG-13 becomes a NC-17...it's damned frustrating, I'll tell you what.

oof. That one's been waiting a while to come out. Heh.

Luckily, I tend to be fairly unobservant when it comes to ratings (unless people make a big deal of it), so I tend no to get too disappointed or anything, but yes, if you're going to rate stuff, make it meaningful.

And sadly, there are many people, even in fandom, who believe that all slash (even mentioning anything gay) equals NC-17. And lo, when I rule the world, such people will be smited (smote?).

Bwah! That's perfect. When I become Queen of the Universe, everyone will be brainwashed to love slash. And boybands.

Ugh, I know. Because apparently nine "fucks" equals an NC-17 rating. Exactly what is R even used for then, hmmm?

From: [identity profile] erilyn.livejournal.com
I've never really understood American ratings - we have a different scale here *g*.

From: [identity profile] kikiduck.livejournal.com
I can think of plennnnnnnnty of R-rated movies that have a whole lot more swearing than that. It's got to be pretty heavy stuff to push it into an NC-17 rating, and it's usually sexual stuff, NOT language or violence. Which come on, everything sexual in that story was implied. Bah.

Date: 2005-11-15 08:21 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] erilyn.livejournal.com
People saying "fuck" and implied sex would only get an M rating here probably (recommended for persons over 15), not MA or R (restricted to persons over 15 or 18, respectively).

I avoid that message board. It gives me a headache. Some of the people on there shouldn't have access to a computer, let alone us it.

I think that goes for all message boards. I found it more readable once I found the option to block signature files, but I'm not going to be spending significant amounts of time there *g*.

My heart started to race and got all excited because I'm going back to the 'motherland' for the holidays. Then my heart dropped when I saw the Manila concert date is 15 days after I leave. :/

Ah, that sucks. The Boys tour of North America started about ten days after I came home from there.

The last time I was there I got blasted for winning the London soundcheck even though I'm not British, and it was "unfair". Fucking insane, that place. Even the LDers are wary of it, and that's saying a lot!

What the hell is Nick doing in China? Do a fucking press conference and give us the dates already, bitch.

And I mean that in the nicest way possible.

Dear Nick,

Seriously, babe. All we want is official dates so we can start planning. Is that too much to ask? I promise if you hold a press conference and let us know soon, I'll give you a blowjob present on your birthday.

Love,

Lex
