Why?

I'm so confused. [livejournal.com profile] marrymehowie linked to Nsync's Greatest Hits, with track listing, due out October 25th.

My question is why now? I know GH compilations are a cheap way for labels to make some more money off a back catalogue, and I'm not tuching onto what this means for the group's future *g*. But the timing really confuses me. No one from Nsync is really doing anything newsworthy at the moment that they can try and piggyback this onto the back off, and there's no new songs, like there were on Chapter One (which BSB did promote, even though it was reluctantly) or Britney's GH.

Of course, my real problem is this: if they wanted to release something Nsync-related, why couldn't it be the Celebrity tour dvd? There were reports ages ago that JC had been involved in editing and stuff for it, and that permission to release for the Beatle's songs to be included had been obtained. Gimme!

In other tragic news, I forgot my mp3 player today. I can't remember how to work without music *sob*.

Good point. They'd make a hell of a lot more money if they released the Celebrity DVD. How many of us wouldn't buy it? And they can charge more then $20 for it, too.

And while there would be more costs involved with it, it's already been filmed (and edited, as far as I know), so surely it couldn't be *that* expensive.

No one's said a word about it at all. Even if it is cheap as hell to make, you still need to promote an album.

The major reason BSB gave for going along with promoting Chapter 1 even though they didn't want it released was that they didn't want something with their name on it to flop.

Perhaps this is some innovative new marketing method - do fuckall?

It makes no sense to release it like this. None. *sigh* There's no mention of it happening, it's bad timing. WTF? Is it just being done to fill the contract? Still . . .it could be timed better... like as a lead in for JC's cd, the holidays, etc. And really? Unless something about the content changes? I'm not seeing a lot of reasons to buy it - even out of general principal. Gr.

The tracklisting is lame, the lack of any news is dodgy, hell, I'm still doubtful it even exists (though that may be denial).

It's incredibly lame... And I just .. Yeah. Me being pouty. lol I like De Nile. Can I go with you?

At the risk of sounding extremely pessimistic, I feel like this is the easiest way out of a record contract commitment for one more CD by [some looming deadline].

You're right, it's a bad reason, but at least its a reason.

Dude, really. This is the lamest 'best of' ever! It's stupid and probably because the label wants money. They're probably contracted to do so many albums in so many years so this fills the order.

why couldn't it be the Celebrity tour dvd

Our battle cry! Sigh. Wants it. I'm glad I got my Nsyncland ones anyway.

No, that would be Hilary Duff's. But this is close.

Yay for bootlegs, but goddamit, I want the real dvd ::stomps foot petulantly::

My guess is that Jive wanted something released from the NSync camp this year. There's no new project ready, neither Justin nor JC have delivered anything, so they're doing a catalogue release. And it may be their way of gauging what kind of audience the guys still have.

There's no one in the world that would choose this over a Celebrity tour DVD. Nobody!

I agree. I'm sure that this is must more from Jive's camp than NSync's. Plus, the fact that there is no new single to come from it (unlike BSB's and Britney's) seems to enforce that NSync wants nothing to do with this.

Didn't they even have any unreleased songs from Celebrity they could have slapped on there? Drowning was an unreleased track from Black & Blue, not recorded specifically for the GH album.

I still wonder about Jive's motivations - I'd love to know what the specifics of their contract is.

Stupid way of gauging, releasing such a craptastic product with probably minimal promo. But I agree with you.

OMG! I'LL NEVER STOP MADE THE GREATEST HITS ALBUM!!!!

Sorry, I just got a little excited. That is my favorite song! But that Joe colab? Why is that there?

I have much love for the cheese of I'll Never Stop (song and video), though the tracklisting is so random that it makes me skeptical.

i'll never stop was a greatest hit? I don't think i've ever even heard it! or that one with joe for that matter! random

You've never heard it, or seen the video (old footage pieced together - it's adorable)? I'll upload them when I'm home from work if you like.

downloaded! thanks!

dude, i totally hadn't heard that or seen the video! it's from no strings attached?!

It's on my copy of NSA *g*. As far as I know, I'll Never Stop was released as a single in Europe, hence the cobbled together video. I read somewhere that the guys didn't even approve of the video (and it wasn't included on their music videos dvd), but I don't know if that's true.

I'm glad it was released though, so much cute footage! *g*

10 Year Anniversary?

My only thought regarding timing is that they could play up the 10 year anniversary angle.

If they could get the guys together to do something for the anniversary, I might forgive them this lame GH *g*.

This is just bleh :-(. Maybe TPTB feel like NSync needs to do something, because of the BSB album.

Couldn't they just get them to make out with Backstreet or something?

Now for that I'd pay a lot!

I had 2 thoughts:

1. it's a 10-year thing? BSB said they wished that theirs had waited until 2003, just so it could be a real "milestone."
or
2. possibly they thought they could hook some promo around the benefit concert NSync was supposed to do? I mean, there would have to have been some sort of news promo with all five (or at least a majority) of the guys in the same place, no?

of course, it's probably just 3: record labels suck.

Date: 2005-09-14 09:11 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] erilyn.livejournal.com
1 seems like a possibility, but oooh, 2 is an interesting theory.

Regarding 3, I'm wondering - are there any that don't suck? There's a lot of anti-Jive sentiment in fandom, but if the guys (any/all of them) were on a different label, would it really make any difference?

Date: 2005-09-14 10:22 am (UTC)
From: (Anonymous)
The anti-Jive sentiment isn't really contained to Nsync fandom, it's pretty much everywhere, I've read interviews where people say that the first thing they would say if asked for advice about the industry is don't sign with Jive.
They screw artists around with sample clearances, creative control, shelving releases and are really good at screwing up promotion, either not promoting releases at all or just doing it half-assed (sound familiar?).
I don't know if being on a different label would make difference for Nsync (I think it would for JC, but that's beside the point) but, yeah, Jive is notoriously suck-ass.

Very interesting, thank you. I'm pretty unaware when it comes to a lot of music industry stuff, but the business side to the guys careers is pretty intriguing.
