Day 1

I'm in LA, and am alive. Sort of. Got so little sleep on the flight (which wasn't bad in other respects, though the extra passport checks and extra required warnings for flights to the US were unexpected) that I slept for two hours when I got the hotel, which I normally try to avoid doing with time zones changes. Didn't end up doing much today apart from walking...a lot. Like hours, often through not interesting areas cause I just wanted to walk. And buying the dual disc of Never Gone from Borders. And seeing Kermit's star on Hollywoods Walk of Fame, which is right near Britney Spears (this seemed significant at the time). And figuring out the LA subway system, which isn't bad. Tomorrow, I take on the buses, to get me to the Getty Centre and Santa Monica I hope.

And I've spoken to Jessa! But the payphone was evil and cut me off even though I put in more quarters. Emailing me about Sunday might be best (yay for hotel providing free net access, even if I can only use it for 10 minutes twice a day) *g*.

Dear citizens of the USA,

So far, I'm enjoying your country, though I miss one dollar coins. They rock, y'all should look into them. They are so very good, especially for things like ticket machines.

We have them, just not very many, and we make a big deal about them, and I don't believe that most machines take them. But we have them. Have fun, and stay safe!

And we DO SO have dollar coins! They're called Susan B Anthony coins and you can find them... um... some place? I know they exist! :D

Actually, the SBA's were taken out of commission, so you might wanna hang onto them if you come across them. They like to push the Sacajaweas in NY (how long before we start referring to them as "Sacs"?). If you get change from a Metrocard machine on the subway, it comes in Sacajaweas.

My father seems to get them at the post office when he buys stamps out of the machine. I've never had this happen, but I also buy stamps by the book, and don't use a twenty to buy three stamps.

Yeah, our post office gives them to you as well. I never buy stamps because I never mail letters, but still, my dad has gotten bunches of them from there. Only place I have ever gotten them and I work as a cashier at a store!

And if the whole Getty thing works out? According to my sister-in-law, the cafeteria at the Getty makes the best grilled cheese sandwiches ever. She's been to the museum 239,297 times with various family members, so she's not that excited about the museum per se anymore, but sometimes she goes just to have the grilled cheese sandwiches.
