My darling, lovely, scatterbrained brother just asked me to do a reading at his wedding. That's very sweet of him, but I have to find the fucking piece to read! And did I mention that the wedding is on SATURDAY!

Their only suggestion was something short, either poem or prose. No Highlander[1], but Lord of the Rings-related [2] is acceptable. But it being fandom-related is of course not necessary, just amusing to me that they mentioned it ;) Also, it's a civil service, and my-cousin-the-minister is saying something, so not overly religious.

Suggestions gratefully received.

[1] Yes, they do seem to be a little behind on my current fandoms *g*.
[2] No seriously, if I found a nice bit of suitable Tolkein, they'd be quite content. I'm just surprised she didn't mention Buffy.

You could always go classical (nyah I'm not biased by mu current fandoms at all)

This is my favourite of Shakespeare's Sonnets:

CXVI

Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O, no! it is an ever-fixed mark,
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.
Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come;
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me prov'd,
I never writ, nor no man ever lov'd

That is a beautiful sonnet. I definitely won't be overlooking Shakespeare :)

Hmm, what about something non-fandom related? At the wedding I went to earlier this year the bride read this old native Indian (Cheyenne, I think) ceremonial wedding piece. It was absolutely beautiful. I can get a hold of that if you want me to?

Heee, I actually just edited the post to make it clear that it didn't have to be fandom-related (it just amused me a lot that they brought it up *g*). I've love to read that, if it's not too much bother :)

Not a bother at all. It's going to be emailed to me tomorrow so I'll pass it on then. They also had a civil service and this piece fit in very well. Nothing religious about it from memory, as both husband and wife are agnostic at the very least.

Oh, and good luck, I'm sure you'll be great. Especially in that coat. ;)

Could you possibly send it to me as well? I'm giving a speech at my best friends wedding in Jan and I'm scouting for inspiration. Thanks!
