Yup, Nsyncland #68 - JT and JC live (SNL and WRP, plus other stuff). I've got an avi of the whole thing though, and if you want that TRL appearance (I've been meaning to email you about that *g*), I could pop this on too.

oh, thanks, that's one of the (many) nsyncland dvds I have ;) I just--I *never* noticed that bit with lance poking joey. Man, so much with the jola, I can't stand it! but thanks!

27 nsyncland dvds. I didn't realise quite how many I had til I sat down and finished labelling them properly.

When we first saw the interview on Nsync Nsane (we mocked the friend who'd bought it until we saw the interview *g*), I don't know who spotted the JoLa bit first, but there was much excitement over it. We were plotting to get her to send the tape to us (she lives interstate), so we could make alasen cap it for us, when it turned up on the Nsyncland dvd.

I follow instructions I found here, a site I found recommended ages ago. Now the owner of it stopped updating it a while ago, so there are probably better methods now, but I've stuck with the system I have. Rip the vob files with SmartRipper. Decode the video with DVD2AVI, and extract the audio and convert it to wav file with Graphedit. Run the video through VFAPI, which creates a "fake avi" file. Join video and audio back together and encode with DivX, using VirtualDub. And I don't know if that made any sense at all :)

it did, but I may be able to help you out with a couple of easier ways-- right now I'm out of bandwidth so I can't put up the program, but I have one called dvd to divx vcd--it converts dvds directly to avi files, including audio, and it uses whatever codec you pick.

there's also a modified version of virtual dub that will open vob files directly, and then you can just save them as avi files from that.

and be sure to grab both files, the VirtualDub-MPEG2 1.5.10, and the
AC-3 ACM Decompressor--the second one converts the audio from dvds. it doesn't always work on commercial dvds (but if you use smartripper and dvd2avi you can probably get them that way) but it always works on nsyncland ones.

I need to write up a quick guide, maybe. :)

I downloaded and immediately made an avi of Chris and JC beating each other up on the Billboard Awards, as it was the closest dvd to the computer. Had some sound issues, but I've had some sound issues lately doing it the other way too (gonna have to re-do Driven and Road to Celebrity). Do you find it better to rip the Vob files to hard disk first, then open them with VirtualDub, or just open them straight from the dvd (which is what I did, to see if it'd work)?

I'll look around for the other program too. I've been lazy, in a "ain't broke" kind of way, about looking at other options, thanks!

I do prefer to burn them to my hard drive and then open them, if I'm doing it with virtualdub--a lot of times with commercial dvds the copy protection gets in the way. Virtual dub *is* a kick ass program. I use it for everything except the actual capture. It's really cool, because with the right filters, you can change the frame size, you can up the contrast and brightness, all kinds of stuff. The filters dialogue is under video, same as the compression stuff. It's very handy :)

I'm uploading the other program for you now, along with a keygen and everything -- it's really awesome because it'll do everything in one step. It can take a little bit, but still, it gets audio and video and you can pick the frame size, the codec, everything. I'm really pleased with it. I'll put the link in my lj :)

and also, re the sound issues. the modified virtual dub and ac-3 handler works on the 2 channel audio--I don't know a lot about it, but I know that once virtual dub has parsed the vob file, or whatever it calls the process, it sometimes gives me a choice of which audio stream to use; if I go with the 2 channel instead of the 6, it works. :)

I love the filters in Virtual Dub, though I haven't played with them as much as I should. I nearly always crop black and fuzzy edges off things (particularly an issue with non-professional dvds) then resize, and deinterlace the video. Must try out some of the other options too, there's some footage I've got that could probably do with playing with brightness and contrast.

Thanks again for these programs, I can see myself getting a lot of use out of them, and I'll recommend them to some friends who've been interested in being able to capture off their dvds, but have been put off by the fiddliness of what I've previously been doing *g*.
