Dad and I were looking at dvd players (and tvs) in Harvey Norman today. I'm quite interested in the Pioneer DV-344 (or nearest model) since I think [livejournal.com profile] hnix, [livejournal.com profile] lydia_petze, [livejournal.com profile] veronamay and [livejournal.com profile] bluecrane all have it, and haven't had problems with it, and it comes all-region.

Anyone else got suggestions, recs or anti-recs? We're also either gonna have to get a new tv, or a converter to run the dvd player through, as our 20+ year old tv isn't really set up for the modern contraptions *g*. We quite liked the widescreen Grundig tvs they had, though I seem to be the only one who likes the flat screen type.

So, dvd player looking fairly likely, tv is a maybe ;)

Amanda has that one as well, and yes, imo it's a damn good player. It's never bumped up against RCE that I know of, and I have some new Warner and Columbia R1 DVDs in my collection. I know Choice magazine did a study of leading players right before I got mine, and I used it as a basis. You may be able to find details of that online, I don't know.

I saw, I was just checking our Choice magazines for something else, and I noticed that Dec 02 had dvds, and the Pioneer was the top choice! So yes, am very very keen on it :) And Amanda too! Does anyone we know not have it? *g*

pioneer is good

i personally have Singer (waits for the sniggering to die down) Yes, I know they're famous for making sewing machines, but they also make kick ass dvd players. I bought it a few years ago, its multi region, multi format (dvd, vcd, mp3, ect ect) and I have yet to find anything it can't play well ;)

but if you are going to get a tv/dvd, buy them together, buy the same brand, and haggle for a discount or freebies ;) my brother got a free video player with his ;)

Mines a pioneer, though a different model, and it's been good.

except the remote control, the up button has never worked, but i think they have different ones now, and i could have taken it back and complained but i was too lazy.

Yup, will definitely be looking for deals *if* we get a tv as well. And thanks for the tip about the Singer, will keep an eye for it :)

Tsk tsk :) I guess the good thing about jumping on the Pioneer bandwagon is that if I have any questions, I'll have lots of people to ask!

Yep, I've got that model Pioneer and it's excellent. You will need a decent tv though to get the most out of it. New ones mostly all play ntsc as well as PAL so you'll be able to play anything from anywhere. very cool.

Oooh, another endorsement, thanks! What's funny is that we can play NTSC on this ancient tv, as it has a manual vertical hold adjustment knob. We will get a new one eventually, we've been expecting this one to die for a while now, but it just doesn't :)

They don't build them like that anymore!
