I am terrible at picking my favourites of things: favourite movie, favourite book, favourite song etc - I hate trying to do it.

But I would have to include Pride and Prejudice amongst my favourite books, so I finally got around to reading Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. I've been wanting to ever since I first heard about it.

Alas, I hated it. It's a vaguely interesting concept that is wasted by the lazy author, who thinks that people puking and lame single-innuendos (which get even less funny as they are repeated) are how to keep things interesting. I wouldn't have been impressed if this had been written for a Remix challenge (though why I have higher expectations of something that is still fanfic, even if it is professionally published, is my own failing).

I think I need to cleanse my palate with some real P&P, though I can't re-read the book just yet. Maybe I'll watch one of the four different versions we have on dvd - but which one?

I just watched the BBC version with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth so I vote for that, even though it's of course kind of epically long.

Also, have you read Pemberly, Inc. (http://thedwg.com/derby/olda/cherylk2.htm) yet? It's P&P set in the 90ies and I really quite enjoyed reading it :) .

Bah to all these zombie/sea monster/whatever remixes!!

Love the Ehle/Firth of course, but the Keira Knightley version is very pretty and over in a couple of hours if you're pressed for time.

I too hated P&P&Z. In fact, I didn't even finish reading it. But I don't have any literary high ground here, because I freaking adored Mr Darcy: Vampyre.

I thought it was funny for the first few pages, but soon realised the guy has two jokes. Only two. And he really loves them. Puke and peen.

Ya know at one point I thought I was the only one who loathed this. When it came out every review was just so "Isn't it wonderfully funny...etc."
I did wonder if we were all reading the same book. I couldn't believe it was just so CRAP! So amazingly UNFUNNY! And to do it he had to really screw with the characters.

Watch the Liz Garvie & David Rintoul version.
Considering they didn't have a decent buget this is an interesting adaption.
Then again I fell for David Rintoul when I watched it as a hormonal teen.

Sadly, it lived up to your warnings about it.

I'm not claiming literary high ground, I think it could have been good, if someone else had written it.

That is definitely the advantage of the Keira Knightley or Garson/Olivier movie adaptions :)

See for me, it isn't automatic to turn to that one (though it is probably my fave), cause they all have their strengths :)

I've eyeballed it, but P&P is like.. My absolute favoritest book ever (next to North and South by Elizabeth Gaskell and Rebecca) and I just can't bring myself to do it.

Yeah, don't do it, you'll most likely regret it IMO.

Sounds like it. I'll definitely steer clear.
