erilyn: gabe and mikey's hips (ladder)

As a devoted reader of Georgette Heyer's romances, I couldn't resist the film about Beau Brummell (fashionista of Regency London who is so often mentioned or even appears in her books) that was on ABC tonight.

In Heyer's books, Brummell was always such a nice guy. Here, not so much. Twas enough to give me the vapours!

First off, while the production and actors were good, I felt like I was watching the second half of something. Was it actually a mini-series? I spent the first two-thirds of the program waiting for flashbacks/backstory, to explain who Brummell was and his background (and Robinsons!), and got nothing. It opens with Brummell already exerting influence, and narrowly covers his rise to the top of the social scene, and his fall. But not by showing him amongst society at large, just focusing on his relationship with the Prince Regent and with Lord Byron, and how his own arrogance and faults led to his downfall.

Plus, it was hard to maintain any sympathy for Brummell, and I totally got confused as to which woman was which (seriously, who gave him money at the end?)

On the upside, the Brummell/Byron was textual. On the downside, I was watching this with my parents.

Ultimately, it left me unsatisfied and kinda bummed out.
