We watched some Australian zoo-based program tonight that included: a rhino (that was hand-raised with a goat for a best friend) that was having to be reintroduced to actual rhinos, a cheetah having major surgery, and baby possums being hand-reared. All very nice.

Oh, and a little fairy penguin that was brought in with injured feet and had to be nursed back to health. Called Rodney.

I nearly died.

Especially when after his feet healed up and he went into penguin boot camp to get him fit enough to be released back into the wild, but they were very worried because he was underweight and refusing to eat. I had to restrain myself from saying "that's because he's been separated from John and probably thinks he's dead!!!"

But hurrah, it all ended happily with Rodney bulking up and being released into the (huge) surf with three other rescued penguins.

I had never heard of that type of penguin before. They are very cute, particularly when called Rodney. :)

Also, when I read fairy penguin I couldn't help myself, I giggled.

Given they're also called other things, I used fairy penguin deliberately (plus, that's what I call them most of the time). They're the only penguins found on mainland Australia, there's a couple of colonies near Sydney, but the poor things are often injured by boats or dogs etc.

Awww, fairy penguins! We went on a cruise in Sydney Harbour and I thought I saw three penguins swimming, but everybody else told me I was delusional. Until we went to the Sydney aquarium and the info sign said they are frequently seen there. Ha! :)

I loved the penguin bootcamp, which was basically a zookeeper chasing them around a shallow pool to make them fitter *g*.

You're lucky to spot them, but it's certainly not unheard of, so nyah nyah to the other people *g*.

*is dead from the cute*

It's just. So, so hilarious! I mean, there's already a dolphin story in SGA, why not penguins? Poor Rodney, stranded alone in Australia trying to get the people around him to realise he's human, dammit, but they just keep chasing him around the pool! He tries to write things on the ground but it's impossible to get anything done with the flappy little wings. And when they finally, finally rescue him he refuses to even look at another penguin ever again. *g*

Ah, there are a couple of penguin!SGA stories, they were written quite early in the fandom, which is why I'm so amused. I reckon there's a SGA fan working at the zoo ;)
