Help - files without extensions

I'm trying to copy some video files (mostly mpg) from a data dvd to my hard drive. Some of the filenames are so long, the end (including file extension) has been chopped off, and they won't copy. Some I can get at by opening them in a media player, and then saving them, but some won't open at all. Anyone got any ideas how I can access these files? Or how I can copy them across without having to open and save (its very fiddly and timeconsuming).
