I've been wanting to pimp this for a while, with all the renewed BSB enthusiasm around and more BSB people (who might not know about it) reading my journal, but the website was down for ages.

The Backstreet Hub is a peer-to-peer file sharing network for BSB media - tv appearances, performances, radio interviews, bootlegs and most things except anything commercially released (anything that is or was available to buy on dvd, video, cd or pay per view webcast). It uses DC++ software (for Windows, more info for Macs below), which resumes downloads between sessions and between users who are sharing the same files. You can search for something specific, or download someone's shared list and browse. The files tend to be fairly well organised and named, though it varies amongst users.

I've gotten, either downloading it myself or from friends who use it too, a lot of footage from there. I'm sharing about 35 gig of footage when I'm on, and there are some people who share more (though many share 1-15 gig, and some don't share, which is just rude after you've been using it for a while, in my opinion). Download speeds and ease of being able to access someone varies, but if you have a bit of patience, you'll get it. Number of users is normally 10-25, though it fluctuates.

Instructions on getting and setting up the software and files are at the website. It looks more complicated than it is, once you work through the instructions it's not too bad. Do read Bianca's rules about what you can and can't share, it's her hub, and you will get warned and/or booted for sharing things against the rules. And join the mailing list, it's a good source of info on new files (both new footage and new files of old footage), info on whether the hub is down (it is occasionally), and for asking for help with the program or looking for files. And once you've got some footage, share! :)

If you're behind a router or firewall, you'll probably be a passive user (you can only download from and share with active users, while active users can connnect to active and passive). This site has good instructions on port forwarding, so you can be an active user.

If you're a Mac user, [livejournal.com profile] alasen recommends some different software to what the hub site does, and has given some starting information )
