Guess not watching the last 2-3 seasons of Stargate really does affect your ability to understand the beginning of Stargate: Atlantis. I really felt like I'd come in half or three-quarters of the way through something. I was surprised when the Scottish guy didn't make a McCoy "I'm a doctor not a..." joke. Jack and Daniel still amuse me though. It hasn't kept my attention tonight, but I'm taping it, so I might give it another try.

Thanks for the file!

It's pretty damn good quality, I'm so grateful to the person who shared it :)

I don't really think you need to have seen the last 2-3 seasons of SG1 to understand Atlantis. Certainly a few key eps of season 8 (the one that just finished here) would help, but then again fucking channel 7 pulled 3 eps that I believe tie into Atlantis.

and why do I not have an SG1 icon? here have some pretty Sheppard instead. *g*

oh and I'm currently downloading the everybody file, so thanks!

[identity profile] melpemone.livejournal.com 2005-03-27 01:07 pm (UTC)(link)
(Forgive me for dropping in on this one, Erilyn :))

I think you need to have seen at least seasons 7 and 8 to understand the beginning of Atlantis, but it becomes less necessary as you go along. I do think that if I weren't an SG-1 fan I would have been at least mildly lost through the technical aspects of the first 20 minutes of the pilot. I haven't seen any more of Atlantis yet (my computer won't run my copies), so I don't know if this remains true, but I do think it helps.

Channel 7, bastards though they indeed are, only pulled one ep of SG-1 Season 8, that one being Prometheus Unbound, which does tie in to Atlantis, but not so much that it doesn't stand alone. I don't get those programmers at all. I think it's time to start writing letters again :/

My, that Sheppard is pretty. :)

[identity profile] indybrat.livejournal.com 2005-03-27 01:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it depends where in Australia you are as to what eps got pulled. My understandig is Sydney just missed Prometheus Unbound while here in Melbourne we missed PU, It's good to be king and and Full Alert. Having not seen the eps I didn't know how much they related to SGA, I just remember someone on a list who lives in Sydney calling channel 7 at the time PU was pulled and the explaination was because of the Atlantis tie in and they didn't plan to show it until Atlantis was starting and that wouldn't be until after s8 finished. And as Melbourne was so far behind Sydney for so long, at one point almost a full season, in order to catch us up they put SG1 on three times a week, so that Moebius pt 2 went to air last Sunday, in time for Atlantis to start this week.

I have to admit I hadn't given much thought to the understanding of technical aspects of the begining of Rising. I was thinking more of understanding the show overall, and having seen the first season of Atlantis, I don't think you need to be an SG1 fan to understand it. Although the explaination of the actual Stargate is not as clearly given in Atlantis, so I can see how non-fans of SG1 may find it confusing.

hmm Sheppard is rather pretty isn't he?

[identity profile] musicdiamond.livejournal.com 2005-03-27 07:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I do think that if I weren't an SG-1 fan I would have been at least mildly lost through the technical aspects of the first 20 minutes of the pilot.

That's pretty much the biggest disorientation I felt during SGA. I've never seen any of SG1, so for the entire episode I kept waiting for an explanation for those crazy flying things, and the chair, and the gate, and whatnot.

But as the show went on, I figured it was stuff that was either covered in SG1 or just didn't matter. As a Star Wars fan, I'm rather too accepting of stuff that just doesn't make sense ::sigh::

[identity profile] erilyn.livejournal.com 2005-03-28 03:44 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe my problem is that I used to be a big fan of Stargate, so I feel I should be more up-to-date with what they're talking about *g*.

[identity profile] erilyn.livejournal.com 2005-03-28 11:27 am (UTC)(link)
It wasn't just even the specific details like the tech (though that's certainly from stuff I haven't watched), it was the way it felt like it started halfway through something, just felt very odd to me.

[identity profile] erilyn.livejournal.com 2005-03-28 11:25 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't think I'd need to have seen them, and I figure most of it will become clear as I watch it, but there was just something so disjointed about the way the show started, not what I was expecting.

You're welcome!

Yay! I can't wait to meet everyone :)

Keep watching. *g*

He's not military. :-)

*la la la*

[identity profile] erilyn.livejournal.com 2005-03-27 11:48 pm (UTC)(link)
Somehow, I had my suspicions that might be the case *g*.

[identity profile] withdiamonds.livejournal.com 2005-03-27 03:05 pm (UTC)(link)
[livejournal.com profile] bellaphena and I are going to Challege!

Have you decided, are you going?

[identity profile] erilyn.livejournal.com 2005-03-27 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I keep wavering (when will I get another chance to do this trip? vs fuck that's a lot of money!), but going is definitely keeps winning everytime. I've got to see which travel agent can do me the best deal before I book (and I picked a long weekend to try and organise this, heh *g*).

[identity profile] withdiamonds.livejournal.com 2005-03-29 01:57 am (UTC)(link)
I'm always in favor of saying 'fuck it' and going, wherever it is.

[identity profile] erilyn.livejournal.com 2005-03-29 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
Heh, an excellent philosophy. I've just discovered my classes finish a week sooner than I thought they did, so now I shall have to rethink the entire holiday, with another week of possible travelling time included :)

[identity profile] withdiamonds.livejournal.com 2005-03-29 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
That sounds even better.

[identity profile] bachelor-girl.livejournal.com 2005-03-27 03:07 pm (UTC)(link)
If it helps, I've seen about 45 minutes total of SG1 and I haven't really had any problems with SGA. But, then, I'm sure there're things going over my head, but I'm blissfully ignorant, so it all works for me. :-)

[identity profile] erilyn.livejournal.com 2005-03-28 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
I shall definitely give it another try, though the odds of me actually remembering to tape it each week are slim (I've so gotten out of the habit since I watch most things by download *g*).

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_bettina_/ 2005-03-27 05:19 pm (UTC)(link)
So no one else on my friendslist is going to Challenge? *g*

I wish I could go.

I haven't seen the last four or so seasons of SG1 and I had no problem following SGA. But after I started watching SGA I borrowed all the DVDs from my brother and watched most of it.

I was surprised when the Scottish guy didn't make a McCoy "I'm a doctor not a..." joke.

Hehe ;-).

[identity profile] erilyn.livejournal.com 2005-03-28 05:13 am (UTC)(link)
I wish you could go to, I'd love to meet you, and for you to be there.

I'll have to give Atlantis more of a chance than I did, the beginning was much more abrupt and mid-show feeling than I was expecting :)

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_bettina_/ 2005-03-28 02:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I had planned on going this year, but then I didn't get the time off during that time. Sad, sad thing. *sigh*

I had that feeling too at first, but it changed soon. I watched the last two episodes of SG1 season 7 and the first two episodes of season 8 after I saw the SGA pilot and then it made a little more sense.

[identity profile] erilyn.livejournal.com 2005-03-29 10:38 am (UTC)(link)
::smites your work for being evil::

I might see if I can borrow them from someone :)

[identity profile] without-me.livejournal.com 2005-03-27 05:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Whoops! *waves* I'll be at Challenge. Bought my plane tickets yesterday so I could stop obsessing over whether fares would go up or down. Ha. Hope to see you there!

[identity profile] erilyn.livejournal.com 2005-03-28 12:10 am (UTC)(link)
I need these public holidays to be over so I can get on with chasing travel agents, but at this stage, I'm certainly planning to. A couple of days in Vancouver, a tour through the Canadian Rockies, then onto Chicago for a few days before Challenge starts to be a tourist :)

[identity profile] faithette.livejournal.com 2005-03-27 05:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Somewhat off topic, and I'm pretty sure I've said it before...

but I absolutely ADORE that Nick icon! It makes me giggle everytime I see it!

[identity profile] erilyn.livejournal.com 2005-03-27 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm glad I'm not the only one ;)

[identity profile] chrismm.livejournal.com 2005-03-27 06:49 pm (UTC)(link)
I can't go, which is a drag--partly for money reasons, and partly because this summer we put on Wagner's Ring Cycle at work, which is a HUGE deal, an every-four-year opera festival extravaganza, and nobody gets much personal life once summer starts, during Ring years.

Plus, I worry how about my (fairly high)level of personal space needs would mesh with the fact that my budget would require room-sharage and such. I don't do well at conferences and other huge public gatherings if I can't get really alone alone time.

But I'm really looking forward to all the stories and photos and whatnot--if a person must experience an event (insert verb--crap--the word just left my brain--through someone else's eyes, it means), then you lot are the best for that. *grins* Everyone writes so well, and tells the best stories.

[identity profile] erilyn.livejournal.com 2005-03-28 12:09 am (UTC)(link)

That's certainly what I'm finding with all this Boys stuff :)

Wish you could come, but I'll be surprised if you have time to breathe. Do you do the full multi-day cycle? I remember when they did in Adelaide in South Australia the other year, they were preparing a year in advance just about.

[identity profile] chrismm.livejournal.com 2005-03-28 12:20 am (UTC)(link)
Vicariously! That's the word. Man, brain fade is the worst.

And yeah, we do the full cycle, three times, plus umpty lectures and other events--it really is like a festival. Each cycle takes up about a week, with the operas and the lectures and stuff, and people come from all over the world for the chance to get immersed in Wagner and the Ring for a week. All the behind the scenes stuff started over a year ago--for instance, they fly the Rhine Maidens so it looks like they're really swimming. It takes a while to teach opera singers how to sing whilst being swung gently about in mid-air, hanging from harnesses *grins*

And then during the actual month of the shows, all the fundraising and marketing people are busy, like, 12 hours a day, keeping people happy and making sure everyone's having fun and getting what they want, so they'll come back from overseas or where-ever four years from now.

As I'm the computer geek, I don't have to do all that--but I have to make sure everyone's stuff is working no matter what, and I have to be all brightshinychipperhelpful, even while people are cranky from lack of sleep and overwork. And since we cut the IT staff, I have to be available.

It's cool--I mean, I love that what I do is related to something I can fully support, and not something that makes me un-proud of what I do for a living, you know? So it's worth a few sacrifices.

http://seattleopera.org/ (pimping--we have a really nice website, which I have nothing to do with, but it's still cool)

[identity profile] erilyn.livejournal.com 2005-03-28 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
What an enormous production! And no wonder you wouldn't be able to get time off easily, especially with reduced IT staff.

It takes a while to teach opera singers how to sing whilst being swung gently about in mid-air, hanging from harnesses *grins*

I'm sure if popstars do it, it can't be that hard for opera singers. Not that I'd say that in their hearing ;)

It is cool when you genuinely believe in what your place of employment does.

[identity profile] chrismm.livejournal.com 2005-03-28 05:01 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sure if popstars do it, it can't be that hard for opera singers.

Hee. shhhhh! *looks around nervously* Though opera stars don't have backing tracks waiting in case they mess up, so it is a little bit different. But yes. It's not like it can't be done, it's just the training thing...

[identity profile] erilyn.livejournal.com 2005-03-28 05:14 am (UTC)(link)
I kid, I kid (mostly *g*). Ha, someone should write an Opera!AU, where Justin could get to be a real Diva ;)

Mmmmmmm, purrty Nicky.

Boston pics

OMG! I completely forgot to mention the 'Shape of my Heart' moment. Someone must've thrown a stuffed heart onto the stage, and Kevin kept putting it up against AJ's chest while AJ was singing and *totally* not paying attention. And then the song was done and AJ opened his eyes, saw it, grabbed it and put it up against his chest himself. *wibble*

}:)
