oh my god, I cannot believe the footage from Japan of the tsunami, my thoughts and prayers are with the Japanese people, and all those affected.

My boss told us about the earthquake and tsunami warning late in the day, then just as I was about to leave a little while later, there was live aerial footage of the wave sweeping across (very flat, obviously a floodplain) Japanese farmland on the tv. We stood in the foyer watching it, just transfixed in horror, watching buildings and trees and everything be swept away. Buildings on fire continued to burn while floating in it. And then we realised that it was heading for was a road, with moving cars on it. They just got engulfed, even huge trucks, and you knew that people were dying in them. And the wave just kept rolling on, across more homes and businesses and roads, and we all just felt so sick. The camera panned back across the farmland to the sea, and you could see more tsunami waves incoming. I'm torn between wanting to check the news, and feeling horribly voyeuristic.

I feel the same way. It's such horrible footage to watch. In one clip I saw earlier, you could clearly see someone on a bike going down the road when the wave was right there. It's horrific.

You've described exactly how I felt watching it. The power of those waves were just tremendous. I saw it reach the road, which is built up above the floodplain and it looked like it would work as a dam and slow it down, the tsunami just built up behind it and then went over the top. I'm feeling horror, sadness and hope that it isn't as bad as it looks. :-(
