my pop video project

With many thanks to all those in fandom who share footage and photos, to glendaglamazon, withdiamonds, eponymous, marrymehowie, daisydust for encouragement, suggestions and clip help, and especially trumpeterofdoom for listening to me drone on about this more than any one person should have to, and for making many useful suggestions (which I didn't listen to enough).

The Joy of Pop
Why I love Nsync and Backstreet Boys - eighteen minutes of song, dance and extreme dorkitude.

Backstory: About a third of those attending the fan gathering get__together in NZ were pop fans. I decided to try making something for us to watch, that hopefully other fans could enjoy watching too, even without knowing the groups or the context of footage. Mind you, I'd done virtually no video editing before, didn't have a clear idea of what I was making, didn't want it too slash focused (didn't want to exclude non RPS fans) and wanted to limit myself to reasonable quality footage, as where we were having the gathering has a bigass screen. Over the month or so that this project consumed my brain, I did question my sanity a fair bit, and my ideas on what I was making kept changing, so I'm not claiming I achieved these goals ;) But I'm reasonably satisfied with how it turned out.

While I was making it, glendaglamazon suggested I ask about the sparklecon footage party. withdiamonds and marrymehowie kindly accepted, and barring any issues (::crosses fingers and toes that the dvd works::), hopefully they will watch it this weekend at the party.

I put in and took out more clips than I ended up using (and struggled to keep it group-centric when it was turning into a Chris and Brian lovefest, I swear) and might ramble at length another time about the making of this (there are two things I had to do that I impressed myself with, though they really aren't that cool *g*). But for now I'll shut up!

Gotta ask - the Lance end, or the credits part? The first part of the video I made was the Lance part (though it then kept changing with better photos of them etc), and the credits part was very last minute *g*.

I love this so very muchly. Footage I hadn't seen before and a bunch of pretty boys all in one place. I had to squee when I heard your radio clip of Chris saying he was coming to Australia to hug you. The entire thing was just wonderful, and made me cherish them all even more than I already did

I do have a question about the footage you used. What appearances were it when Justin and JC are engaged and Chris got him pregnant, and the Joey loves Justin appearance?

Btw; what program did you use to do that, if you don't mind telling?

I've realised that I'll need make a big list of footage so people can find stuff they haven't seen before *g*. The first bit is from an interview they did in Japan, not sure of specifics, I got it from an Nsyncland dvd. The second is from Live at Much 2000.

The major editing work was done with Cyberlink PowerDirector, but I also used VirtualDub, WinAVI, Windows Movie Maker and Creative Wave Studio.

I gotta ask - in the performance section, there's a clip of a performance of Celebrity live that I haven't seen before - what's that from? I think there's a snippet of Pop from the same source later on as well. But I don't recognise any of it, and it looks really good actually.

The Celebrity tour footage is from Steve Fatone's company's website, I think it's the only pro-shot footage of the tour that exists, alas. I suspect I'll be sharing it, as you're not the first to ask about it :)

That is absolutely fabulous. I think it's makes a great introduction to the fandom; I was thinking that a bit more interview footage might be good, but thinking about it again, as you say a lot of the enjoyment of short clips of that depends on already knowing more about the context or the people, so I think you hit a good balance. It made me squeak out loud with glee several time, but especially at the end. You definitely deserve a Chris hug for this :-)

Thank you so much! One of the things with clip choices was I was also trying to keep it to about 15 minutes or so (18 minutes isn't so bad *g*). Watching it with a mixed audience, I felt that the performances went on a bit long for the non-pop fans (which I'd suspected, but was kind of over it, and couldn't bring myself to cut it *g*) and that more goofiness might have been needed.

It was interesting trying to decide what to include, so much stuff that I thought of needed more context, or to show longer clips than I wanted to use (or the video quality wasn't very good). I wibbled about including the BSB Oprah clip, just cause of the sheer amount of backstory (and ensuing events) that gives that appearance it's real impact, but couldn't not include it and figured people who don't know the other stuff can still enjoy hugging.
