The Tick and favourite books

Last night, iibnf and edgehd showed me a number of episodes of the short-lived live action series of "The Tick". Fucking hilarious show, and so incredibly slashy. I need more *g*. And I swooned with jealousy over one of iibnf's purchases from her trip that I hadn't heard about.

You know, JC is still on the Aussie charts. He's #19 on the ARIA dance singles chart, has been in for 15 weeks, high point was #3. Why did they stop bothering with Schizophrenic, why? And I saw an official Justin calendar for sale when I was out shopping today.

ABC (public broadcaster here in Australia) held a big poll for what is Your Favourite Book? They got tens of thousands of responses (though the host joked on radio the other day that probably means about fifteen thousand *g*), and announced the top ten results on a live show this evening. I hope they put the top hundred up on their site here.

I've read all of them but A Fortunate Life, Cloudstreet and Catch-22 (which I tried to read in my teens but could not get into). Interesting that I haven't read either of the two Australian novels in the top 10. Ok, I haven't read all of the Bible, but I have read quite a bit of it.

What's Cloudstreet about? I've never heard of it.

Its about two families growing up in Subiaco (points THATAWAY) from about the fifties to the seventies. But it has all these mystical elements. One of the families, the darling boy is nearly drowned and is mentally disabled, so he sees things differently, and sometimes others see it to. It's...it's like reading a dream. And it is very, very engrossing.

It's one of those books I've felt I should read, but have never got around to. Actually, the same could be said for all of Tim Winton's stuff. Oops.

Cloudstreet is great, but my favourite is Dirt Music. Depressing for most part, but so beautifully written.

I loved watching the show tonight. Books! Discussed intelligently and amusingly on TV! I'm amazed at the idea of that many people voting though (yeah, there might be some juggling of numbers).

I didn't actually see all of it, and I missed the Umbilical Brothers, which my sister said was great. But it was very interesting :)

You're not alone. I've heard people rave about Tim Winton, but both of his that I've read, The Riders and In The Winter Dark, have left me pretty cold.

I'm surprised to see A Fortunate Life on the top there, as I thought that was dreadful, and badly written. Most of the others I liked, though.

I've vaguely heard of it, but never read it (probably cause dad's never read it, and my chances of reading something like that are much higher if he had it).

Batmanuel was one of my favourite parts of it too! Especially once edgehd cleared up why he was naggingly familiar (yes, I used to watch "Suddenly Susan" *g*).

Dude, we did A Fortunate Life in Year 8 or something. Cloudstreet is Tim Winton, isn't it? I have a ban on reading any of his stuff after having to do Open Swimmer for 3unit English. Blergh.

It was never one of our books, must have missed the bullet on that one. Yup, Tim Winton, I've never read any of his stuff. One of those authors I hear a lot about, but never have enough impetus to check out.

Heh. I'm the same about Nick Earls. People rave about him, but I didn't even make it halfway through one of his books. I absolutely hated his style.

He never ever finishes a book well. He can set up comic situations, and then the ending's are always disapointingly flat and unfunny. Bleurgh. I used to keep reading each new book in the hopes he'll fix it, but nope, they're almost all like that, adult and YA novels. I've given up now.

Ah, but I'm a purist. I much, much, MUCH prefer the animated version of the tick. Though to be honest, the live action show is pretty true to the same craziness and surreality of the cartoon ;) There aren't many eps of the live action serie, though, it didn't last long.

Whee! The only thing bad about The Tick is that there are only nine episodes. I couldn't resist, though, and ordered the dvd from the US, money be damned. ;)
