HIS new single, SexyBack, went straight to No.1 in the Australian charts, and now there's every chance Justin Timberlake's fans will get a chance to see him up close later this year.
Representatives from Timberlake's local record company, Sony BMG, have confirmed they are in the midst of negotiations for a visit at the end of this year.
If all goes to plan, the singer will be back in town for a promo tour, off the back of the release of his new album Future Sex/Love Sounds, which is due out on September 9. (Incidentally, Timberlake has substantially turned up the lyrical heat on this record, with his local reps declaring openly that the new album is not one for the kiddies.) But news of a potential visit is sure to get Timberlake's Australian fans excited.
"There is talk of him possibly coming out later this year, which is yet to be confirmed," said one Sony BMG spokeswoman.
Timberlake, who toured Australia in 2004 (with his girlfriend Cameron Diaz watching from the wings), has created an edgier, exciting sound on the new album, under the guidance of in-demand producer Timbaland. The clip for SexyBack provides the first look at his new direction - and it looks promising indeed.
One of the new songs that is still under wraps, What Goes Around .../... Comes Around, has attracted the early interest of interviewers, because the lyrics contain a curious message, along the lines of "You cheated on me, now he does it to you and the whole world's watching". Axle Whitehead, Australia's Video Hits presenter, couldn't resist asking Timberlake, during a recent overseas interview, if the song was about Britney Spears but Timberlake denied it. (Incidentally, the singer had generally banned any Britney questions as part of his interview).
